[opensuse] Thunderbird and archived mail broken?
One of the nice things about Thunderbird is the ability to archive mail locally. I have used it in the past when it worked well. Not any more! I am using TB 45.6 in Leap 42.2 with KDE Frameworks. I have two accounts, one IMAP and one gmail. I have set the IMAP account to archive messages in the "Archives" folder in Local Folders, but it consistently ignores this setting and moves them into "Archives" on the IMAP server. The Mozilla help forum has been unhelpful, and googling hasn't provided a solution either. Does anyone on the list use this feature of Thunderbird? Have you come across this problem? Yes I use this .... in 13.2, TB 45.6.0 on KDE4 With no problems. I "archive" some of my IMAP accounts to the IMAP server, some to my local file system under various folders under ~anton/Mail/ hierarchy. Lots of specific folders there! I normally use the 'yearly' archive option. Normally you need to set up local folders, but I have a Dovecot server running that makes all of the archived mail in ~anton/Mail/ available to my Thunderbird as another IMAP account. I set the option to "Other". You would need to do that if you used the "Local Folders" methods too. Once you grok the mindset of the developer by reading the wiki (as is always the case with any non-trivial application) Dovecot is remarkably easy to set up. Its doing the complex "ISP/Service provider" stuff with it that gets mind-boggling with all the options and interactions with databases. For a single user on a home machine, the simple server set-up is straight forward and it offers an immense amount of flexibility over regular "commercial ISP" IMAP accounts :-) Its reports like this that make me reluctant to move to LEAP. -- A: Yes. > Q: Are you sure? >> A: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation. >>> Q: Why is top posting frowned upon? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

So, it works for you in 13.2, and not for me in Leap 42.2. I'm not convinced that's enough evidence to prove a cause and effect relationship, and the problem is not big enough for me to revert to 13.2 just to test the hypothesis. Thanks for the input, though. Bob -- Bob Williams System: Linux 4.4.36-8-default Distro: openSUSE 42.2 (x86_64) Desktop: KDE Frameworks: 5.26.0, Qt: 5.6.1 and Plasma: 5.8.2

I have been running a Dovecot server for years and it worked well. When I updated to Leap, it stopped working. Rather than try to resolve the issue, I just started using my ISPs IMAP server. I initially started running my own IMAP server because my ISP (actually Yahoo provided the mail server for my ISP) didn't support IMAP at that time. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I'm updated to 42.2 from 13.1 and Dovecot works just fine. Of course, I had to adjust apparmor, but that was expected. That said, I do not know if the Archives folder in Thunderbird works or not. I do not know how it should work. I see a Local folder there with years subfolders and some posts. I also see a gmail folder with many thousands of emails from the lists. I don't know why they are there. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

just as a wild guess, try to use a different folder name (other than Archives), just in case this name is hardcoded without path... jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Good suggestion. I did try that, but without success. I also tried restarting Thunderbird in Safe Mode (all extensions disabled) but it still archived to the Inbox/Archives folder. I have been quitting/restarting TB each time I change a setting. Thunderbird is persistently ignoring the settings in Account Settings > Copies & Folders > Message Archives. I've just discovered that it does the same thing with Drafts. IOW if I set Drafts to be saved to Local Folders, this is ignored and they get saved to the Drafts folder on the server. I just tested than on my 42.1, changing draft to local/draft worked as expected (french version) jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thank you for testing. It seems to be a local problem, so maybe my best bet is to uninstall Thunderbird, clear out my existing profile to get rid of the faulty setting, then reinstall. I should be able to bring in my existing archived mail from a backup. Maybe tomorrow, as my grandson is helping me finish the beer leftover from Christmas/New Year. We're neck and neck. ;-) Bob -- Bob Williams System: Linux 4.4.36-8-default Distro: openSUSE 42.2 (x86_64) Desktop: KDE Frameworks: 5.26.0, Qt: 5.6.1 and Plasma: 5.8.2
