No, it doesn't HAVE to be on a separate box, but it might be a good idea. The less programs and services a computer has running, the smaller the risk that one of these programs and services has a security hole that will render your firewall useless. It all depends on what level of security you want to achieve, and how sensitive the systems you will be protecting are. If it is just a small home network, I would put the firewall on the same box as a combined mail/web/file server. For a small company, I would suggest the following setup: Firewall with 3 network interfaces: 1 to the outside, 1 to the server park and 1 to the internal network. No. Any PC can run firewall softare, but it is better that the firewall be a separate box. tabanna wrote:
