I had to give my user (me) permission to read the CD. KSCD has built in help that gives the details on what to do. Click around in the player and you will find it. I know it sounds stupid, but... Have you checked the obvious? Is your CD player audio output connected to the sound card audio input? Have you turned up the volume on the CD input? (use e.g. kmix).
