RE: [SLE] News: SuSE Linux 7.1 pending release February 12
2d. It was really hard to get even a basic x-windows desktop to appear with 7.0. It took me over a week to get any graphics. If i was a first time user i would have given up. so 2d will be fine. dids

Can someone make sure that this release works with Nvidia Gforce2 ( including mx ) cards straight out the box. If it does I will buy it. If it doesnt I wont.
2D or 3D? 2D works with the XFree86 nv driver. 3D needs the NVidia driver and there are quite a few problems with that driver. As this driver is binary only, we can do nothing about it. Complain to NVidia as they're the only ones how can fix anything.

Do not be too harsh on SuSE on this one (not that you are being that way) as it was a new card at the time and the drivers were low beta (they are still beta at this time...). Even though Nvidia are doing good things with there cards in linux obviously at the moment there main focus is Windows driver support. To really answer your question 7.1 comes with Xfree 4.02 that will totally support the Nvidia 2 cards. The only problem would come in the form of BIOS settings not being set correctly (setting enable IRQ for VGA to yes and setting pnp OS to no). Once that is done its a breeze. Trust me, just spent a few days working on that (and boy, did I feel stupid once I found out it was due to my earlier excursions in there). Matt On Mon, 29 Jan 2001, dids wrote:

Well, I have a Viper 770 (TNT2) card and 7.1 setup everything during install perfectly...even 3D accel. I had to do nothing to get this work...and let me tell you Q3A, Heavy Gear and Soldier of Fortune kickass now..even the OpenGL screensavers in KDE2 work wonderfully. If it does even 1/2 as good with other cards ..it will be amazing. * dids (richard@diddyland.com) [010129 03:00]: =>2d. => =>It was really hard to get even a basic x-windows desktop to appear with 7.0. =>It took me over a week to get any graphics. => =>If i was a first time user i would have given up. => =>so 2d will be fine. => -- Ben Rosenberg mailto:brosenb@suse.com --------------------------------------- SuSE Inc. 580 Second St Suite 210 Oakland CA 94607 U.S.A Tel: 1-510-628-3380 EXT:5086 Fax: 1-510-628-3381 --------------------------------------- "There are no problems, only solutions."
