When I start Netscape, I get the following non-fatal error message on /dev/tty10: "ERROR: libc.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Cant load plugin /usr/X11R6/lib/Acrobat4/Browsers/intellinux/nppdf.so. Ignored." This is the Netscape and Acrobat that comes with the SuSE distro. I don't use Acrobat as a plugin, and I can't find a way to stop this. Any ideas? You probably need to install the old shared C library (ver 5), 'shlibs5.rpm'. Note, this package is almost 40 megs! david. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I seem to remember that at the Netscape download web site they have both libc5 and libc6 versions of the software, though possibly not under those names. Maybe it's called glibc. This business of getting the right library can be very confusing, and is one of the least attractive aspects of installing Linux software. On Linux, glibc 2 is used as the libc with major version 6, the successor of the Linux libc 5. It's probably a good idea to not use libc5. I took it off of my computer so that everything could be up to date (and to salvage disk space), and only had to recompile one program (wipe). I guess the main reason to keep it, would be if you could not compile a newer version (or get a newer binary). -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Nope, I've already got that installed. What I really need to do is tell Netscape that I don't want to use any plugins. The only option in Edit|Preferences that deals with helper apps doesn't mention Acrobat or pdf files :-( Any other ideas? This is due to the fact that Netscape is a glibc (libc6) program and the Acrobat plugin is still libc5. Won't work. You have to disable the plugin (so Netscape doesn't load it). I think there is an entry in the Support Database on what else to do... Yes ... It is at http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/jd_acrobat.html
Simply following the instructions about installing acroread
as the application to run for Portable Document Format worked
fine (I didn't bother with the recommended "unset LD_PRELOAD"
business in /usr/X11R6/bin/acroread, and it worked all the same).
