Still a few things I don't get right
Hello, I'm back at trying SuSE after a switch to Debian. Most things in 10.0 seem fine but there are a few "problems" I don't seem to get hold of: - I tried setting the system to eject CDs/DVDs on unmount but this causes the drive doors to stay open - the system seems to eject if there is no CD. Might work with slot-ins but... Is this a bug or a feature? - My machine is a dual processor, so automatic powerdown won't work (because APM is not supported). The problem is that the graphic screen at shutdown hides the necessary information as to when shutdown has completed. I have not found a way to tell the system not to use graphics (so I have to hit ESC to know if I may shutdown). - On a less important matter, I managed to have most multimedia stuff working, however DVDRip still eludes me. I found the package and cured most dependance problems, but starting dvdrip brings a message saying that it "Can't locate Locale/TextDomain.pm ". I googled and even compiled some perl locale stuff, but it does not solve the problem. Maybe someone allready went though this and can explain what I do wrong? Not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself? Frank Zappa
Hi,
Thierry de Coulon
- My machine is a dual processor, so automatic powerdown won't work (because APM is not supported). The problem is that the graphic screen at shutdown hides the necessary information as to when shutdown has completed. I have not found a way to tell the system not to use graphics (so I have to hit ESC to know if I may shutdown).
Open YaST -> /etc/sysconfig-editor -> Search for "splash" -> Set to "off" bis dahin/kind regards Martin Mewes -- Die Hamburger Linux User Group (HHLUG) erreicht ihr ... ... WWW: http://www.hhlug.de/ ... ML : http://mlists.hhlug.de/mailman/listinfo/linux-l

Thanks/Danke! I did not think of this as a splash... I have another question though: I had to deactivate the kde wallet system because I would have to grant access to the wallet about ten times every time I would fetch my mail: although kmail was set up to store the passwords, it would not, or anyway it would still want to access the wallet. Oh, and when you plug in a cf card, it is auto-mounted, but you can't "safely remove" it because you are not root... and you have to su to umount it and format it... I never liked subfs but I had hoped it had got better - will have to deactivate that as well. Is the system so stupid, or am I? Thierry -- The problem with the world is stupidity. Usb and cf cards are mounted with sync so you can unplug it as soon as you end with writing/reading. -- Pavel Nemec package-maintainer --------------------------------------------------------------------- SuSE CR, s.r.o. e-mail: pnemec@suse.cz Drahobejlova 27 tel:+420 2 9654 2373 190 00 Praha 9 fax:+420 2 9654 2374 Ceska republika http://www.suse.cz

Hi, that's not a solution, that's a workaround. I don't want all USB media mounted "sync" (I know the method to disable this on a per uuid entry). The hal/udev reads the mount options from fstab if the device is in there. Is it possible to add the option "users" to these auto-collected options for removeable media? Especially for dynamic named media? -- mdc

You have to install the perl module Locale::TextDomain. I don't know if it's available as rpm, but you can also install it using cpan or download it from cpan.org. If you already installed this module, but perl doesn't find it, add the directory to the environment variable $PERL5LIB. Regards, Christian Boltz -- Never let a computer know you're in a hurry.

google: perl Locale::TextDomain suse rpm http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/1581968/com/perl-libintl-perl-1.... look for the src rpm and rpmbuild it for 10.0 You could dl the source from: http://search.cpan.org/CPAN/authors/id/G/GU/GUIDO/libintl-perl-1.16.tar.gz configure -> make -> checkinstall these two methods would keep your SUSE system rpm intact whereas using cpan to install would not. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2
