[opensuse] Several openSUSE 11 issues
Since the upgrade to openSUSE 11 I have encountered several problems which I cannot resolve. Please, help a newbie :) I have openSUSE 11 installed on Inspiron 600m with Compiz enabled and run at log-in. Very bright screen at start. When I boot the computer and openSUSE starts it sets brightness to the maximum. I have adjusted the settings in KPowersave, so after KPowersave starts brightness comes back to normal level, but it's still rather annoying, especially at night. How can I change this initial brightness? Smb4k scan returns nothing. Smb4k function to scan the network for local computers seems to be blocked by the firewall (since it only works when firewall is turned off). I have done everything that was required in openSUSE 10.3 to let the scan work with firewall running. What has changed and what wholes need to be punched? Skype video is buggy. When I receive video, the call-window gets corrupted -- I can't see the preview of my stream or the controls for this call. Also, sometimes the camera just zooms in by itself. I use Labtec Notebook Webcam Pro for video. Above-mentioned apps (Smb4k and Skype; the brightness wasn't controlled by the operating system at all) worked fine in openSUSE 10.3, also with compiz. I'm not sure though if the next two problems are related to the upgrade. Windows' decorations and cube caps corrupted after resuming from suspend to disk. After resuming from suspend to disk, windows' decorations and cube caps (from "Cube Reflection and Deformation" plug-in for Compiz) are just colorful shred. Is there another solution except for running emerald --replace when resuming? This fixes the first problem. Unexpected and unprompted logouts. From time to time, usually after long time of running the computer, the system freezes (although music, if any player is running, still plays for a minute or so), then the screen goes black and suse logs me out -- login screen is the first thing I can see after the freeze. What can it be? X window system going down? Which log files may be helpful? Can this be caused by excessive heat? -- skx, http://skxpl.eu.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I guess, this one is Skype problem. I'm using Skype on 10.3 and before the latest Skype update video worked fine. With the latest Skype I see the same problem. That is, same OS 10.3 + newer Skype 2.0.0.72 = bad video call Window. -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

... It could be webcam driver (SPCA5XX) as well. I remember there were a couple of updates of gspca between Skype 2.0.0.68 and 2.0.0.72 and I'm not sure I tried video with all combinations of Skype 2.0.0.68 and different webcam drivers. -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Did you report this problem somewhere? -- skx, http://skxpl.eu.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Not yet. I tried searching skype forum and there were some reports, but not with the latest version. I'll do it later. -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Not yet. I tried searching skype forum and there were some reports, but not with the latest version. I'll do it later. You're doomed :-(. I was having trouble with the webcam and Kopete. I posted just last week about it. Look at the thread with subject "webcam with Kopete". It seems that the spca driver isn't so good

Just in case you have not seen it: this has recently been discussed on skype forum. Same issue with disappeared controls observed with different distributions. The problem only exists for dynamically linked version. Statically linked one works correctly. I've checked it. There is a bug opened: https://developer.skype.com/jira/browse/SCL-375 -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Am I really the only one experiencing these problems? -- skx, http://skxpl.eu.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
