Promise ultra 100 tx2 with suse 8
Hi all, I have a problem that my Promise ultra 100 tx2 card doesn't work with SuSE. I have tried both 8.0 and 8.1 with the same result. However it works perfectly on the same box with Mandrake 9.0 and RedHat 8.0, so it must be SuSE specific problem. After searching the net I found that other people seem to have the same problem, but unfortunately didn't find any solution for it. I was suggested that the problem is related to a bug in the kernel 2.4-19, but there was no clear indication how to proceed to overcome it. Such a stupid question: if I take kernel sources from Mandrake or RedHat, compile them and instal with SuSE, will it work? Or is there any other solution? Here is what I get during the boot: <4>PDC20268: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 68 <6>PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:0d.0 <6>PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 00:05.0 <4>PDC20268: chipset revision 2 <4>PDC20268: not 100%% native mode: will probe irqs later <4>PDC20268: (U)DMA Burst Bit ENABLED Primary MASTER Mode Secondary MASTER Mode. <4> ide2: BM-DMA at 0x7800-0x7807, BIOS settings: hde:pio, hdf:pio <4> ide3: BM-DMA at 0x7808-0x780f, BIOS settings: hdg:pio, hdh:pio <4>hda: MAXTOR 4K080H4, ATA DISK drive <4>hdd: ASUS DVD-ROM E616, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive <4>hde: Maxtor 4G120J6, ATA DISK drive <4>hdf: Maxtor 4G120J6, ATA DISK drive <4>hdg: SONY CD-RW CRX195E1, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive <4>ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14 <4>ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15 <4>ide2 at 0x9000-0x9007,0x8802 on irq 10 <4>ide3 at 0x8400-0x8407,0x8002 on irq 10 <4>hda: safely enabled flush <6>hda: 156301488 sectors (80026 MB) w/2000KiB Cache, CHS=9729/255/63 <4>hde: failed write cache flush, disabling ordered write support <6>hde: 240121728 sectors (122942 MB) w/2048KiB Cache, CHS=14946/255/63 <4>hdf: set_drive_speed_status: status=0xff { Busy } <4>hdf: drive not ready for command <4>hdf: failed write cache flush, disabling ordered write support <4>hdf: status timeout: status=0xff { Busy } <4>hdf: drive not ready for command <4>hdf: status timeout: status=0xff { Busy } <4>hdf: drive not ready for command <6>hdf: 240121728 sectors (122942 MB) w/2048KiB Cache, CHS=14946/255/63 <4>ide-floppy driver 0.99.newide <6>Partition check: <6> hda: hda1 hda2 < hda5 hda6 hda7 > <6> hde:hde: status timeout: status=0xff { Busy } <4>PDC202XX: Primary channel reset. <4>hde: drive not ready for command <4>ide2: reset timed-out, status=0xff <4>hde: status timeout: status=0xff { Busy } <4>PDC202XX: Primary channel reset. <4>hde: drive not ready for command <4>ide2: reset timed-out, status=0xff <4>end_request: I/O error, dev 21:00 (hde), sector 0 <4>end_request: I/O error, dev 21:00 (hde), sector 2 <4>end_request: I/O error, dev 21:00 (hde), sector 4 <4>end_request: I/O error, dev 21:00 (hde), sector 6 <4>end_request: I/O error, dev 21:00 (hde), sector 0 <4>end_request: I/O error, dev 21:00 (hde), sector 2 <4>end_request: I/O error, dev 21:00 (hde), sector 4 <4>end_request: I/O error, dev 21:00 (hde), sector 6 <4> unable to read partition table <6> hdf:hdf: status timeout: status=0xff { Busy } <4>PDC202XX: Primary channel reset. <4>hdf: drive not ready for command <4>ide2: reset timed-out, status=0xff <4>hdf: status timeout: status=0xff { Busy } <4>PDC202XX: Primary channel reset. <4>hdf: drive not ready for command <4>ide2: reset timed-out, status=0xff <4>end_request: I/O error, dev 21:40 (hdf), sector 0 <4>end_request: I/O error, dev 21:40 (hdf), sector 2 <4>end_request: I/O error, dev 21:40 (hdf), sector 4 <4>end_request: I/O error, dev 21:40 (hdf), sector 6 <4>end_request: I/O error, dev 21:40 (hdf), sector 0 <4>end_request: I/O error, dev 21:40 (hdf), sector 2 <4>end_request: I/O error, dev 21:40 (hdf), sector 4 <4>end_request: I/O error, dev 21:40 (hdf), sector 6 <4> unable to read partition table Thanks, Yuri.
This is interesting - I have the same card with a standard SuSE 8.0 install and it works fine in my server.

I don't have one of these cards but I do have the same problem with a
Promise Ultra-66 under SuSE 8.1. Basically I have to turn off DMA to get
it to (a) install in the first place and (b) to boot once installed.
Have you tried this ?
Apparently there is a new kernel for 8.1 which I am going to try when I
get the chance. I the meantime I just stuck with 7.3 which works fine.

Thanks, Yuri.
I had a similar problem with the Promise FastTrack TX2 ATA 100 RAID card on 8.1. In my case I was able to install, and things operated fine until the partition on the RAID card got a lot of traffic. Then my filesystem was destroyed, little by little. I did not initially get these errors, it was not until a load was placed on the partition. But the errors were similar to yours; many of these:
<4>hde: status timeout: status=0xff { Busy }
And other errors in your message above. What was happening with mine was the install autodetected the card wrong and installed the wrong driver. Promise *still* hasn't released the correct one (as of last week anyways) for 8.1. As I mentioned in an earlier post to this list, SuSE had listed my Promise card as fully supported in their hardware database; which was completely untrue. I haven't checked yet to see if they have fixed that problem. Anyways, I would check to see if you are using the correct driver, or if there even is a correct driver for that card. brian -- Brian Hampton H I Solutions, Inc.
