MBR-backup/restore to be added to yast + recovery utilities
Recently the MBR of my principle disk was destroyed. (I think by growisofs, but everyone I know thinks this is impossible. Yet, I was working with growisofs just before the MBR was destroyed) I had written a copy of the MBR to a different disk (I think by šdd if=/dev/hda of=/somedirectory/buMBR count=1š), and restored it again with the dd command. Shortly after Yast complained that the MBR was improperly formatted, and that it should have been written by šcanŽt rememberš My question/proposal: could/should an MBR-backup be added to yast, and could/should a restore feature be added to the recovery-utilities? Think this is a miss in SuSE, and that adding it would be great. (Unless I am mistaken, and it exists already. Then IŽd like to hear where it can be found) Thanks -- Julien Michielsen julien@michkloo.xs4all.nl

I see that in the 10.1 install (DVD or CD 1), there is an 'Other' button where you can select the type of install you want to do. That takes you to a great menu where is an option to repair a broken sysyem. It will even let you select what to fix. One thing is the boot tracks. It may also be available in YaST. But I bet if your boot stuff is bad you can't get to YaST. So having it on a bootable DVD/CD is smart. -- Roger Oberholtzer

There is such a beast. See Control Centre/Bootloader and one of the options where you can restore the MBR. Cheers. -- All answers questioned here.
