Can't get video clips to play from laptop through projector -- long, sorry.
Hello, everyone. I checked the archives but did not find anything similar. Sorry for being so long-winded, but I want to be clear on what I am trying to accomplish and what I have done so far. Im using SuSE 10.0 on this laptop. I needed to develop a lecture using Powerpoint and video clips. So I tried imbedding the video clips into Powerpoint, but PP wont accept several of the video formats. So I tried imbedding the same video clips into Open Office Impress, but Impress wont accept any video clip formats. I posted this problem to the list several weeks ago, but so far no solution. It has been suggested that I have a Java issue, but I am unable to get things working. Therefore, for the moment I have abandoned the idea of imbedding the videos into the presentation program. Instead I found a work around. I realize this is a Mickey Mouse solution, but it seemed to work as I will explain. I put the PP presentation onto desktop 1. I put the video clips into a folder on desktop 2. I then start the PP presentation, work my way through it, and when its time for a video clip I switch to desktop 2, click on the video clip, and it opens in Totem (my media player of choice). Admittedly, this is not ideal, but it works on the laptop. Now, heres my problem and where I need your help. Saturday night I had to give the lecture. I connected my laptop to a Viewsonic projector and powered up the system so that the laptop would detect the projector. I then configured the projector: KDE control center > Yast 2 modules > hardware > graphics card and monitor > (password) > activate dual head mode > configure > second monitor > change > Viewsonic pj1000 > 1024X768 XGA. Note that the list of available drivers in SuSE 10.0 did not include the model of the Viewsonic projector I was using, so I selected the closest model number. Then I began my lecture and had a major problem. The Powerpoint displayed perfectly on the large screen for the audience. And when I switched desktops and launched Totem, the audio component of the video clips played through the speakers. But, in the Totem window where the video was supposed to be, I only had a blue screen up on the wall for the audience. At the same time, the video was playing perfectly on my laptop. So I could see the video on my laptop but the audience could only see a blue screen bordered by the Totem window while they were listening to the audio. I restarted the laptop but that did not help. I also tried opening the videos using Kaffeine, but still I got only blue screen bordered by the Kaffeine window for the audience. Fortunately on Saturday the audience was only 10 people, so they could all crowd around my laptop and view the videos. It was an unprofessional way to do it, but at least I was able to get through the lecture and the audience worked with me. But in 2 weeks I have to give the same presentation to an audience that will be at least 60, so crowding around the laptop wont work. I have no idea why the videos play perfectly on the laptop while simultaneously the audience sees only a bordered blue screen. Maybe its a configuration problem with the projector, but if so it is mystifying why the Powerpoint does play for the audience but the videos wont. After all, everything is coming from the same laptop source and going through the same cable to the projector. Maybe it's a "Windows thing." ??? Whatever the case, I absolutely have to find a solution in the next 2 weeks for the next lecture before a much larger audience. At this point rather than searching for a solution by imbedding the videos into the presentation program, my sense is that it would be better to find a way to get my admittedly Mickey Mouse work-around working at least I know it is a viable solution on my laptop. Now the trick is to get it working through the projector. My presentation in 2 weeks will **not** be using the same projector. I do not know what kind of projector I will have then, but if it is essential to your search for a solution I may be able to find out. I also do **not** have access to the projector I used on Saturday. That is now in another state, far from my home. So, any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. Again sorry for being so long-winded. Thanks! Gil --

Hi Gil, I believe that this problem might be related to the fact that most video application use some 'work arounds' to speed up the video output when playing movies. This means that they do not use the standard X server but simply create a window on the desktop an then fill that window by writing more or less directly into the graphic card's memory. That will not work with a dual-head set-up. The only way I can imagine here is to use a standard output method which does not go around the X server but uses it. If you use kaffeine, the xine program is used to do the real work. Call xine directly with --help and it will display a number of options for the video output methods. Try these and have a look whether any of these will give a display on the second head. Most likely, the output will be pretty slow if it works at all.
