Well, I would just say to the rants about no .iso's is this plain and simple.
Get the f**k over it. It's not changing..it's the way it is. And they are going to continue to do it this way so they survive and are able to pay for all the development they do.
Wasting everyone's time on this list bitching about something that has been in effect for 2 version..is just beating a tired, dead old horse.
Cheers!

and what exactly are those that want to try suse out but dont want to invest in because they dont know if they are going to like it or not suppost to do? And what about those that are shit ass broke suppost to do? They move on to other distros. And SuSE looses a potential customer You mean to tell me that you want to sit there and watch SuSE lose potential coustomers everyday?? Someone on this list made a very good suggestion: Have ISO's but keep them a version or two behind the current. My fight here, is not totaly 100% personal, if it was 100% personal then I woulda shut up along time ago. I talk to lots of people on irc in and out of linux channels that would love to try SuSE, but dont for the simple fact that SuSE doesnt have ISO's. and they dont know how to do a package by package download and they dont know how to install from an ftp. These are the people I fight for. And as for the decision to remove the ISO's from the ftp was infact for development costs But I see this hurting them more in the long run then what its gonna help them.

It twas me that suggested that. Hell even 7.0 for god sake. Like at least let em know were a really solid company and that we kick ass over all the rest.

I see a lotta folks on IRC also and mostly I believe the ones that want to download say 7.3 wouldn't have bought anything anyway. But then most folks don't have broadband to download that much disk. I don't, and again I would end up buying the box. But if there was say 3-4 disks it sure would be a nice way to review how great suse is. On the one hand I don't see an easy answer to this question, on the other hand there's no reason for good folks to fight each other over the answer, I am going to be redundant and say I believe it's really up to the CEO /CTO to make the decision and then carry the can. I just hope the decision is the correct one and that suse doesn't end up carrying the can. Ask yourself this. Why can redhat release an ISO? Why can Mandrake? I believe the answer to these questions could help.
And as for the decision to remove the ISO's from the ftp was infact for development costs But I see this hurting them more in the long run then what its gonna help them.
I dunno it may, then again it may not. Suse already has become word of mouth in many circles. A big thank you to suse for a fine OS! -- Leave the Constitution Alone. http://members.osb.net/phil
When as Red Hat made a signifcant profit or Mandrake for that matter not very often because most download the iso never buy boxed after. They just wait for new iso of next release etc... Red Hat compared SuSE is lot bigger so they may have more funding than SuSE. But you are correct we should be bogging down list with an old why no ISO debate. Alex :) phil wrote:

Loki gave demos and where are they???!!!! The personal version is $30 .. I spend more then $30 on Lattes a month. We really should get over this free bullshit mentality. You can't get an .iso of XP or anything else for that matter from MS..so WHY HELL should you get a copy of SuSE's hardwork for free. You can go to buildyourownlinux.org and try all that stuff yourself. This I want to try it for free. I want this for free shite is what got Loki Chapter 11 then Chapter 7. I don't know about you but I'm REALLY pissed off that I won't have many more Linux native games for quite some time. I bought every SuSE distribution from 5.0 to 6.4 and I've bought 7.2 and 7.3. You can bitch, moan and complain all you want. Activision wanted their money if I recall. This has nothing to do with a linux distro IMO. Your talking games. And I always though there was some unwritten law that if your selling / writing / coding games you get to charge money period. If they give you a demo then great, it's like doom shareware. Your talking about Recreation not the core of an Operating system <echo>.

I heard they owed money to Activision. And they had low sales (some speculate because folks were running games under wine) And again, LOKI ain't an operating system IMO <echo>.

I came from slack / caldera / redhat /mandrake 6.to 8. then suse, I can tell you when I was in Comp USA I was VERY unsure about buying SuSE 7.2, but found out it was the best decision I ever made! I don't know if other folks would have had the balls I did. ;o)
You can bitch, moan and complain all you want. You won't change my mind.

03/2002 copy of the Linux Magazine page 69 has an interview with Peter Blumenwitz from Apax Partnerts a Venture Capital firm and the title is Wo Kommt das Geld her ? Where does the money come from ? ( Ooops hope I gor the translation right, since my german is too rusty. If you have a chance have a look at it and you will understand why free iso's are not the answer for a company to survive in the years to come Sorry Ben before you put a procmail rule I had to press the "y" key :-) -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

I actually bought a second 7.3 Pro just for use at the job. I had forgotten my CD pack at home, and decided I was tired of trying to force W2K to act like a Unix OS. I don't mind spending my money on the product since I believe in it, and I know the money is going back to the developers. It's getting to be time for another release. I guess we need to start whining about a delivery date, no? Steven
