How do I boot to run level 3 in Suse 10, besides logging in as root and using a konsole? In 9.2 there was an option at the boot splash to enter boot options. I only occasionally do it so I do not need a perment change. -- ___ _ _ _ ____ _ _ _ | | | | [__ | | | |___ |_|_| ___] | \/

As far as I know, it has been always there, and still is. Just type a 3 before the kernel starts loading. At the first key you type, it stops counting down time and waits. On the other hand, text mode is always available: [ctrl][alt][f1]..[f6] - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFER5uutTMYHG2NR9URAsm1AJ0bM40YpyGSoEYQnyhkZLg4+ux9NgCeIGji UQXB3Jqjr0WcP4U8y8edl7Y= =5rRs -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Not quite, it's kinda obscured, unless you modify the boot parameters in grub.conf. You have to hit F2 (I think) for "Options" - this opens the line where you add kernel parameters. By default SUSE puts a "showopts" at the end of the kernel parameters in grub/menu.lst - nothing before it is displayed, everything after it is. I always take this option out and change the splash=silent to splash=verbose - like to see what's going on! Hans

I thought it oppened with any key, or as soon as you start to look for one of the systems to boot up and down. I don't remember, but I know I find the way when I need it ;-)

Well, yes, I always have it at "verbose" too. But regardless of the "showopts", you can always add a "3" there. Whether you have to press "F2" first, I wouldn't know, in verbose mode you don't need it. - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFER9NatTMYHG2NR9URAsILAJ9aUvdXBRpbgjj5hbqhcCacxgRE8gCffTv1 eBYHvniIz24zp7p7tT4oEPk= =F7sv -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

I only occasionally do it so I do not need a perment change.
As always, at the boot options line enter a 3 and hit the enter key. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

If you want it to permanently boot into init 3 then edit the /etc/inittab and change: # The default runlevel is defined here id:5:initdefault: to: id:3:initdefault: Brad Dameron SeaTab Software www.seatab.com

# The default runlevel is defined here id:5:initdefault:
to:
id:3:initdefault:
Additionally you can use YaST2.
Click on System/System Service (Runlevel)
Then click on Expert Mode. At the top there is a pull-down menu under:
"Set default runlevel after booting to:"
This gives you the choice to set the default run levels if you do not want
to edit the /etc/inittab file yourself.

init 3 at boot time. It hasn't really changed.
