Hi all. I should install the NVidia driver on my SuSE 8.1 kernel 2.4.21 dflt. Following the NVidia HOW_TO I should install, among the others, the package NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-5336.rpm that has been built for 2.4.19 kernel. Can the difference in kernel versions prevent from a correct installation of the driver? emilio

I think so. When I install a new kernel I usually rebuild the Nvidia driver if I have to using the latest driver from nvdia.com. Install the new kernel. If you reboot and don't get a graphical login, log in as root and go to runlevel 3: # init 3 Then run the NVIDIA installer When you run the package, called NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run or similar, it will offer to download a precompiled module. For this to work, you can use cinternet (see man cinternet) to establish a connection before you try installing. (For obvious reasons kinternet won't work). If you need to build your own nvidia driver, you'll need lots of build tools from the Professional DVD installed and you'll need the kernel source installed for the kernel you're building. -- JDL
