[opensuse] Chat programs for local use
I want to allow chat between a few developers on the same LAN, but in different offices. We started with talk, which in fact works fine - with one issue: getting attention when a message has arrived. So, I am exploring options. Anyone have a suggestion for a decent local chat system? By local, I mean that it cannot use external resources / servers. We need to run whatever is needed on our own systems (our workstations or an internal server). It would be great if it ran on openSUSE 11.2 and newer. I see smuxi, which is a client and server. Anyone use this? -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. Hi Roger, Maybe look at setting up a jabber server - very quick to set up. Then you could use Pidgin or whatever you fancy. This all presumes you will be running in a graphic desktop environment :) Kind Regards, Lester On 14 September 2010 12:35, Roger Oberholtzer <roger@opq.se> wrote:

If you want something that doesn't go out and you want to set up users local. Jabber is great, I like Openfire, it is easy to set up and once you a user in it they log in, they get everyone else add to them. And you can set up for groups as well. http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/openfire/ -- ----------------------------------------- Discover it! Enjoy it! I need to install this on openSUSE 11.0. I tried building the source rpm from openSUSE, but got complaints about not finding javac and the JDK. javac is installed, and JAVA_HOME is set to "/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0.u6/jre" I will try to find a newer server so I can install a release rpm. I will let you know how it goes.

Why? Just pull down the archive and run the install. There isn't any point in building it from source. <http://www.igniterealtime.org/builds/openfire/docs/latest/documentation/install-guide.html>

Yea, compiling [building] anything Java [on any platform] is a twisted nightmare. Fortunately doing so is most often pointless.
I will try to find a newer server so I can install a release rpm. I will let you know how it goes.

I just installed the RPM from openSUSE on an 11.2 system. During the installation, you are asked for an admin user name and password. I did so. Then, as part two of the install, you need to log in with that user name and password. This fails. I removed the RPMs and tried again, and it does the same thing. I am using 3.6.4-7.1-i586 from obs://build.opensuse.org/network I should have been suspicious of any software that has an easy install :) -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. I also installed the RPM from the openfire site, and I get the exact same problem when trying to log in to the Admin Console. The user name and password I choose in the setup step is not accepted. I have chosen to use the embedded database and not set up an external one. I guessed that was easiest. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. We run an internal OpenFire (XMPP) server. Simple to setup and very robust. Use whatever XMPP client you like. -- Adam Tauno Williams <awilliam@whitemice.org> LPIC-1, Novell CLA <http://www.whitemiceconsulting.com> OpenGroupware, Cyrus IMAPd, Postfix, OpenLDAP, Samba -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
