when I start a vcd in mplayer, it hesitates, opens the movie, and gives me an error box with an OK button. The error message is: ioctl dif1: Invalid Arguement the movie plays just fine, but every time I open a movie I get this error. Is there some way to get rid of the error message, or what else can I do? -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user # 367800 X-Request-PGP: http://home.comcast.net/~p.cartwright/wsb/key.asc

open a console, type mplayer vcd:/1 and see if there are any more useful errors. Hans

Apologies for my typo, it should be mplayer vcd://1
why does it try to open the joystick port for a movie?? MPlayer can use a joystic as a kind of remote control.
Hans

doesn't matter, the error report gave me the answer, I added a line to sysconfig and the error problem went away! I always forget about running things in command line to SEE the errors...

thanks for that info!!! -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user # 367800 X-Request-PGP: http://home.comcast.net/~p.cartwright/wsb/key.asc

Paul: If you indicate what the change was we all can benefit from it, if you solved your problem and just post thanks I realized what the problem was, it only helped you. Julian

Julian Sorry Julian, I sort of mentioned it in an earlier post but didn't say SOLVED. the answer was in the error message:
Try adding "echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq" to your system startup scripts. I actually added a new script called RTC to /etc/sysconfig and it includes that line. No more error message on mplayer startup. -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user # 367800 X-Request-PGP: http://home.comcast.net/~p.cartwright/wsb/key.asc
