I had the same messages under slackware, and they were pretty much harmless. I never experienced problems with my system even though I had that message pop up during boot. I THINK (I could be wrong) that it had something to do with my settings for LBA for my hard disks, etc. -----Original Message----- From: dedwards@technologist.com [SMTP:dedwards@technologist.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 24, 1998 8:33 PM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: [S.u.S.E. Linux] Compiled Kernel questions (2nd posting) I sent this message a few days ago, but did not see it echo on the list, so am resending it, hoping someone has an answer! I've just compiled the kernel for the 2nd (well 2nd successfully) time. Why - the last compile, I did not use SuSE source, this time I did. I also wanted to change my MB chipset settings, and I wanted to change my sound chipset. I chose the ALI M14xx MB chipset, and the Crystal Sound Chipset. Copied the zImage to loadlin directory, set ide0-ali14xx boot parameter, moved my CDRom drive from slave on the first controller to master on the second controller. Booted okay - looking good - 2nd IDE controller access etc. Question though, in the boot messages, I get: hdb: probing with STATUS instead of ALTSTATUS hdb: probing with STATUS instead of ALTSTATUS Is this bad?? - what can I do to get rid of these messages?? Also - what can I do to get mixer working on my Soundcard?? - pretty general question, I know, but maybe someone out there is a real whiz with sound, and can point me in the right direction - even if it's only to the necessary docs (and the HOWTO's seem woefully dated - maybe I'm looking in the wrong places:->) I compiled in the Crystal CS4232 sound driver - because my Sound board had chips on it with Crystal written over most of them:-)) The documentation said that there was no mixer driver available at the time that the SuSE 5.0 package ws put together, so I'm hoping that there may be one available now!! -- Dave E. -Linux 2.0.30 -SuSE 5.0-- Linux - the choice of a GNU Generation--- No more Blue screen of Death - and no regrets - Goodbye Microsoft! ----------------------Cyrix 586/100-32meg-2g----------------------- SHAMELESS Plug:-- dedwards@technologist.com 23yr of MF exp. avail. for home-based outsourcing contracts. ------------------------------------------------------------------- -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
