Re: [SLE] trying to get lilo back on MBR
Hi, I had no end of problems on 7.2 In the end I had to create a small DOS partition then it worked. I too had my / partition on /dev/hd'x'3 Regards Matt -----Original Message----- From: Mike [SMTP:bcomber@freezer-burn.org] Sent: Tuesday, October 23, 2001 7:47 PM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: Re: [SLE] trying to get lilo back on MBR On Tuesday 23 October 2001 19:15, you wrote:
hi,
MBR on /dev/hda has been erased and I am trying to get my lilo back.
my / is /dev/hdb3
I booted from suse disk 1 with [rescue] option mounted /dev/hdb3 on /mnt
but simply typing # lilo or # lilo -C /mnt/etc/lilo.conf
didn't solve my problem. what should I do?
thanks, baris
When you boot from the CD, you can boot the installed system. It asks where your / directory is, and in this case it would be /dev/hdb3. Once you do that, you can run lilo, and all should be well. Had to do this and got the same things you did. Once I booted the installed system it worked.. Mike

Hi, Please could someone post the easy steps for reloading lilo on the main record block of a HDD. After a power cut yesterday a SuSE 7.2 box blow its Lilo bootup stuff to produce a LIL- I have managed to reboot using a boot floppy disc and all looks great the network is ok and modules seem fine I used... boot /dev/hde1 However I would like to reload lilo on the MRB so that I can boot via HDD again.. Any steps.. (plus a fall back option if it all fails if possible).. 1) boot /dev/hde1 2) ..... Regards Matt

I believe you are referring to the MBR (Master Boot Record), not MRB. Anyways, LILO can be re-loaded by running 'lilo -v'. That will re-write LILO to where it was configured to be. You don't seem to want to change any settings... To see where LILO is being installed, run 'cat /etc/lilo.conf | grep "^boot"'. The partition that's listed (in 'boot = /dev/hd??' format) is the one where LILO is installed. If not partition is given but a hard drive (e.g., /dev/hda), LILO is installed in the MBR of that hard drive. A fallback option... just use the floppy you have now. -- Karol Pietrzak PGP KeyID: 3A1446A0
