The December 97 "PC World" had a review of current boards showing no advantage over PCI versions. Eventually game software will appear which take advantage of the AGP 3D texture capabilities. However, most current boards don't even have the AGP "guts" that provide this feature! They are simply bus compatible
I went to a training session yesterday with HP regarding new technologies and we discused the twin AGP standards quite a bit in our lecture materials. Some of the advantages is moving the graphics adaptor off of the pci bus which widens bandwidth for other devices like scsi cards, pci sound cards, etc. The ability of the new generation of motherboards to handle cards like the true color hp cards which require both a pci and agp slot are numerous. There is software, according to hp, which now is out supporting at least one of the agp standards. Obvioiusly one level of advantage is the removal of graphics adaptors from the pci bus which widens the bandwidth and performance of other pci devices. The new 3d boards and 3d animiations and other applications are quite spectacular, imo.
