[opensuse] Xen in 11.0
Well I took my own quasi suggestion and tried to set up Xen again in 11.0 x86_64. By that I mean, stop trying to create the finished product the first time and start simple. By _that_ I mean, play the dumb user and just install the default full desktop, work at the regular real console no serial console, use sub-2TB partitions and an ordinary msdos disklabel, and then use the gui util offered in the main gnome menu to install Xen, reboot into dom0, then use the gui util to create a vm, install opensuse 11.0 into that just as if it was a new bare metal server. It all worked! Not even a hiccup the whole way. Same machines I couldn't even get grub* to boot before. *opensuse 11.0's grub. 10.3 worked and so did ubuntu 8.04.
From the reading I had done, It looks like it is a tremendous amount of work to get Xen all square like that so thank you indeed opensuse.
Well there was a slight hiccup but comparatively it's so trivial it hardly matters. The kind of thing I wouldn't normally bother reporting. But I can't say "not a single glitch" if there was even something small, so I describe that, which actually serves to highlight how there really was nothing consequntial. "If that's my only problem, I have no problem!" In the interest of reducing the oddball factors, another thing I did different from usual was I made a usb stick of the mini.iso kernel and initrd and booted from that instead of PXE. (machines have no cd nor place for one, 12 sata drive bays in 2u.) Then pulled the stick out once the ramdisks were loaded to protect it from getting grub written to it later. Upon reboot I got a working grub menu but the menu.lst stanzas all had root hd1,0 where the correct value, if the machine is booted without the usb stick, is hd0,0 . I was able to edit that right at the grub prompt and boot up, then fix it in the file and it reboots by itself just fine now. Thats just booting dom0 (before it was a dom0) on the hardware, nothing to do with xen. -- Brian K.
