I've got exactely the same problem yesterday nigth, when I've tried to make sound working. I have compiled the kernel, and the after the reboot, the mouse stopped worked. Bur I've noticed a message containing theses words during the boot time (sorry, I don(t remember the exact content: SERIAL-PORT...MULTI-DEVICE (or -PORT?)...SHARED IRQ enabled... I've made a "make clean" (it was the first time), a "make dep" and "make zImage", and now this message has disapeared, all is right. There was just some dust somewhere ine the source tree :-) Ph.
