Re: [SuSE Linux] WVDial
I have downloaded the .tar source code file of wvdial. Having never used a source file before, I really can't grasp the concept that is laid >out in the advice I have seen here or on the wvdial homepage or even my help files, for that matter. All I see is "make" and "install". Could someone put this into English, please? Ok, lets see if I can help you. First of all WVdial is a command line PPP program. If your using Xwindows, you might want to try KPPP or EzPPP. WVdial does work very well though. Your wvdial.tar.gz file is uncompressed like this. tar vfxz wvdial.tar.gz (the file name of course will be whatever you have.) After that, change directories and simply type make. after it finishes type make install. That's about it. Edit the configuration file that is stated in the readme file and it will work like a dream.

Hope I don't sound like I am trying to save the world with wvdial but it is a great little program for newbies and, since it so easy to use, you will keep on using it with even more experience. True it is a command line program, but I have an icon on my KDE desktop that will launch it in a terminal window (Kvt, rxvt, xterm, etc.) Unlike the some other dialers, if it is slow to connect you can readily see that the line is busy and it will sit there and redial every 10 seconds until it gets through.

Is there anything special about a pap connection. I tryied wvdial and got messages written to the effect thatCHAP authentication failed. I also just installed ezppp and did not experience any problems. Any hints of tricks on PAP. I have a /etc/ppp/pap-secrets file. Well my old employer uses PAP for the net connection and I'll be getting a dedicated iDSL this month with CHAP connection. So I use X-ISP from <A HREF="http://users.hol.gr/~dbouras/"><A HREF="http://users.hol.gr/~dbouras/</A">http://users.hol.gr/~dbouras/</A</A>> . I use the RedHat/SuSE vars in the makefile. Comment out and un-comment so it looks like this: # # Makefile for xisp, xispdial, xispterm, xisprccv # and xispid. Read INSTALL for editing instructions. # If your architecture is already supported, comment # out everything but the section you're interested in. # #===================================================================== # Compilation resource vars (global for all following sections) | #===================================================================== # INCX11 = /usr/X11R6/include LIBX11 = /usr/X11R6/lib INCFORMS = /usr/X11R6/include/X11 LIBFORMS = /usr/X11R6/lib # #===================================================================== # Linux Section | #===================================================================== # # Normal vars (e.g. Slackware) #------------------------------ #BINX11 = usr/X11R6/bin #USRLOCAL = usr/local/bin #SBINDIR = usr/sbin #VARRUN = var/run #USRLIBPPP = usr/lib/ppp #OPTSDIR = usr/lib/ppp #MANDIR = usr/X11R6/man/man1 #ETCPPP = etc/ppp #DESTDIR = #GROUP = uucp #GCCFLAGS = -Wall -O #EXTRADEFS = #EXTRALIBS = #INSTALL = install # # Linux on the Alpha #-------------------- #BINX11 = usr/X11R6/bin #USRLOCAL = usr/local/bin #SBINDIR = usr/sbin #VARRUN = var/run #USRLIBPPP = usr/lib/ppp #OPTSDIR = usr/lib/ppp #MANDIR = usr/X11R6/man/man1 #ETCPPP = etc/ppp #DESTDIR = #GROUP = uucp #GCCFLAGS = -Wall -O #EXTRADEFS = #EXTRALIBS = -lcrypt #INSTALL = install # # Debian vars (add -lcrypt in EXTRALIBS and -DGLIBC2 in # EXTRADEFS, if your Debian distribution uses glibc2) #------------------------------------------------------- #BINX11 = usr/X11R6/bin #USRLIBXISP = usr/lib/xisp #USRLOCAL = $(USRLIBXISP) #SBINDIR = usr/sbin #VARRUN = var/run #USRLIBPPP = $(USRLIBXISP) #OPTSDIR = etc #MANDIR = usr/man/man1 #ETCPPP = etc/ppp #GROUP = dialout #GCCFLAGS = -Wall -O ##EXTRADEFS = -DGLIBC2 #EXTRADEFS = ##EXTRALIBS = -lcrypt #EXTRALIBS = #INSTALL = install # # Red Hat vars (add -lcrypt in EXTRALIBS and -DGLIBC2 in # EXTRADEFS for version >= 5.0). I get the same thing. In fact it appears that there are traces of wv's need for chap, because when i dial with normal /usr/sbin/pppd , it fails a couple times until it's convinced chap isn't the way to go. it also alters the /etc/ppp/pap-secrets file. If someone could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.
