Re: [opensuse] no sound recording on 10.2
Hi there! have you tried with alsamixer? make sure that the "Capture" settings are reasonable... HTH, Martin ----- Original Message ---- From: Istvan Gabor <suseuser04@freemail.hu> To: opensuse@opensuse.org Sent: Tuesday, January 30, 2007 10:41:20 PM Subject: [opensuse] no sound recording on 10.2 Hello: Now I am having a problem with sound capturing/recording in SUSE 10.2. The hardware is OK since in 10.0 on the same machine this function works fine. Voice coming from the microphone can be heard in the speakers/headphone but it is not captured/recorded. For this reason skype does not work either. I've tried several possibilities to activate capturing using KMix and Kamix w/o success. Once more, I have no problem in SUSE 10.0. How could I fix this, what should I check? Any suggestion is appreciated! TIA, IG _______________________________________________________________ Ne csak a lakást nézze, hanem a környéket is! Hi Martin: I checked again the settings in alsamixer more carefully and realized that an option called IEC958 (I have no idea what this is) were turned on alongside the microphone. This option is hidden in KMix and KAmix. If this IEC958 is turned on, it blocks capturing from the microphone. It is also interesting that this IEC958 is the only channel that can be turned on while another channel is on. All the other channels are exclusive, ie turning on one of them disables the other one (except this 958). The point is that the problem has been solved. Thanks! Hi Martin:
I checked again the settings in alsamixer more carefully and realized that an option called IEC958 (I have no idea what this is) were turned on alongside the microphone.
A digital interface protocol that is used to transfer digital audio data between professional digital audio equipment such as PCM and DAT mastering recorders, MDM recorders and other equipment. This protocol is most commonly known as AES/EBU, but IEC958 Part-4 is the actual name for it. Two channels of digital audio are carried on a single line. An XLR-type connector and a shielded cable is typically used. More recently a two-line standard has come in to play as more people are working with 24/96 material. IEC958 A standard for digital audio transfer published by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission). The IEC958 standard describes (specifically in IEC958 Part 3 and IEC958 Part 4) the protocol used by what we commonly refer to as AES/EBU (now called AES3) and S/PDIF for transferring digital audio data between hardware platforms. In your case it's likely the s/pdif interface for the sound card.
Thanks!
IG
