[opensuse] A hopefully stupid hardware question - power led?
All, I've got a PC that has power-on LED around the power button. I swear it used to be on when the PC was on and off when it was off. Now it seems the LED is almost always off (and maybe it is always off). Most of the time I don't care, but if I'm shutting down for some reason, I can't always tell when power down is done. Is there a bios setting to control that on some MBs? I just realized it could be the connector came loose. I don't recall when I last saw the light on. It's not something I look at most of the time, even though I sit 3 feet from it. fyi: AsRock X99 Extreme4 is my MB. Some?/most?/all? LEDs have a polarity, so if connected backwards won't do anything. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I guess I need to do a couple reboots and see if that light comes on at all. I know it used to, but I took the PC out for a road trip a month ago. Maybe I jogged the wire loose. You find the layout of the board on page 12 The connectors to look at is 18 Powerled Header PLed1 and 20 System Panel header. The system panel header are the two inner pins from the left. The outer are for the hdd led. The have a sense (the pinning are usually placed with a red cable for + and a white one (or black) for mass. Whether the Nr 18 is to be branched depends on the case. ftp://europe.asrock.com/Manual/X99%20Extreme4.pdf is the link, there is of course also a US based server but this should load anyway. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks Stakanov, Seems like the LED on my chassis is weak. Maybe I need one of those neon light kits that fit behind the transparent side panel? I could actually do that I think, but it seems a bit obnoxious. Maybe I can find a small LED to somehow mount to the side panel? (My panel does have a transparent window if I could find a surface mount led package I could mount to the back of the side panel, and the side panel faces my chair, so it would work fine.): http://www.thermaltake.com/Chassis/Mid_Tower_/Core/C_00002402/Core_V51/desig... The case actually has a 3-year warranty and it's only a year old, but I doubt it is worth the hassle to Thermaltake fix it. Especially if that involves shipping the whole chassis to China or something. == details I've now have the sides off and the front panel off. I can now see the actual LED and not just the circle around the power button. I actual have two identical chassis's. So I have the front panel off the other one too. The LED is actually lit, but it's very dim. It's also fluctuating in brightness occasionally. The "good" one is steady and bright. Right now the bad one is really dim, but then it gets bright for a half second or so. By dim, I mean even with the room light off, it is dim. The good one is at least 5x brighter. I pulled the cable loose and reseated at the MB end. I even moved the connection from connector 20 to connector 18. Same dim LED. On the front panel end, it is very hard to get to and I'm not sure it even has a connector, as opposed to being soldered directly to the front panel board. I did poke around either the connector or the solder joint, but I didn't pull very hard. Seems like overkill to replace the chassis because of a weak power LED. :( Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I just might do it! I already have those kind of light strips under the shelving units so I can see what I have on the shelves (USB hubs, docking stations, drives, etc.), so it would fit in perfectly! I actually had a client (40-year old programmer) come in to my lab last week, before he could get across the threshold of the door he said "Whoa, the ultimate man cave!". So those lights would fit right in. fyi: I have the front panel back on. The room lights are on. I just cupped my hand around the power LED and I can't tell if it is off or on. The computer is on, so I assume the LED is, but it really is unusable for the purpose. Then that LED assembly is bad. I'd bet a bad solder, I have never seen a actual bad LED, but hey, this might be the first :-p -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" (Minas Tirith))

Could be. Like I said I took this PC for a road trip last month and it could have shaken the connection a little. I'm not likely to get out a soldering iron and try to fix it. Adding a light behind the transparent side makes more sense I think. Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Is it not something to do with the bios smart power led setting? Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
