[opensuse] can't install Xerox Phaser 6140 printer
Think i may have posted this before. If so, sorry. But have no reply. Try add printer and it lists the phaser 6140N.ppd which is correct. Software from Xerox is installed. The add printer box asks for address which I don't know what that is. I typed 192.168.1.105 in the box which is where I think the printer is but it says it can't find it. Tried the same thing with http:// in front of the numbers and still it says can't find printer. Please help .Newbie here. Please make instruction simple. As usual we need more info. How is the printer connected: direct to pc or network? If network do you have a DSL/CABLE router that provides the printer an address? If so look on the router for the address that was assigned to the printer or print out a config page from the printer that should show that actual address or set the address via the printer conf settings. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Will try the config page and get the address. Is it added with numbers only or w/ the http first. It's USB printer connected to a cable router. Works fine in Ubuntu 11.10 so I guess it just needs the address in Suse .Thanks. Dotted quad numbers only, but you might need the name of the print queue as well. For example, my Draytek router sends stuff to the printer through a dedicated printer port on 192.168.1.1 (the router's LAN address) but I have to specify p1 as the queue name. If it is connected to the router's USB port then it will most likely use the router's IP address on TCP port 9100 (depending on what os runs on the router). It may need an ipp:// prefix too (i.e. ipp://<router_ip_address:9100). If it works in Ubuntu, on the Ubuntu box try browing to localhost:631 and check out the cups configuration there (i.e. the details of the print queue that cups is printing to). Then duplicate that via cups on the openSuSE box. You may need to point it to the ppd file installed by the Xerox software. I suspect that the Xerox software would recognise it if it was plugged directly into the USB port on the openSuSE host. Have you tried that? Get it working that way first (so you know it works), then setup the remote print queue in cups using the same driver. Everything I try gives the same result. Failed to add printer. The config page shows IP as 192.168.1.103 and port 9100. Thanks again for your help.

Still can't add printer in Suse. Anyway to get a username and password for localhost:631. Like to try that.Any other suggestions? Installed fine in Ubuntu v 11.10 Don't follow your comment above re: plug directly into USB Port in the open Suse host. Thanks again. Bob, if you can plug the printer into the router's USB port then I assume it can be connected directly to a USB port on the computer that is running openSUSE. Try that and see if it is recognised. After you have it working like that, then plug it back into the router and get the network printing working. One step at a time - get the most basic setup working first. Then deal with the more complicated stuff. -- =================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au =================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
