[opensuse] desktop effects not available 11.3 nvidia 256.35
![](https://seccdn.libravatar.org/avatar/f15c560a0ca9454d9c0122ea1a7a54e2.jpg?s=120&d=mm&r=g)
Using System Settings-Desktop I cannot activate the desktop effects. I get: 'Compositing is not supported on your system. Required X extensions (XComposite and XDamage) are not available.' Everything is greyed out. Any ideas on how to activate the desktop effects? Xcomposite and XDamage do not appear in a Yast search. Thanks L x -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Try taking a look at the X log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log). If the default on-the-fly X configuration is not working correctly, create an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file with an "Extensions" section with the Option "Composite" "On"; when X starts it will use this file, overriding the automatic configuration. The programs nvidia-settings and nvidia-xconfig will generate the file, as *perhaps* will the now deprecated but still available sax2. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks. That works. I now have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf again. You have to be root and type nvidia-xconfig then change composite to on rather than off. Thanks. L x -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

My xorg.conf only has this in it:: Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "on" EndSection -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
