Hi everyone. I have to ask again, sorry. My machine hangs when I move a window or using menus (freezes). This happens only in Tkdesk (editor), Netscape and Emacs (in X). This started after "upgrading" to 6.2 from 6.1. How do I find out whats the problem ?? Tkdesk use Tk, right ?? And Netscape and Emacs use motif ?? I have upgraded all packages rekomended by SuSE, inkluding XFree86 3.3.5 and the new mach64 package. I've had the same hardware for years and I had no problems like this before. I use Pentium 200, 64Mb EDO, 8.5 Gb, 120Mb swap, ATI mach64, SuSE 6.2, Kernel 2.2.10. It doesn't have to work very hard anyway... But i've tried different configurations anyway, but the problem remains. Could it be a hardware problem ?? It "feels" like it could be the ATI board, but why only with those programs ?? I want to be sure before I invest in new hardware. Could somebody give me advice on how to go on and "debug" my system ?? My desktop also freezes (6.2) when I use <alt><tab> to change windows, sometimes. <ctl><alt>x seems to bring it back. Jim S. Thomas Bohlin wrote:

My experience of Linux is that when it crashes this hard it's probably a hardware or hardware config error. My system used to crash intermittently and it turned out to be a wrongly configured (at the kernel level) sound card. To track down your problem, upgrade to the latest kernel (2.2.13), and recompile it without network, sound, or whatever else you normally use. Physically remove what you can from the machine. See if the problem goes away. If it does start reintroducing things until the problem comes back. If a very basic system fails it could be your graphics card. Can you borrow one for an hour or two? If not, buy the cheapest old 512K Cirrus Logic PCI card you can find. I keep a spare one and they cost about 10GBP (16$US). Then see if the problem goes away. Plus you can check the basic stuff. Is your CPU cooled adequately? (Open the case and point a desk fan into it!) Is your memory or any PCI card loose? Chances are the problem will be hardware or low level config based, rather than Linux itself.

Thanks a lot Derek !! Now a got something to work with. I figured it could be a hardware problem, but I was not that sure what to do, or where to begin. But I didn't know that every damn piece of hardware could mess up my system.. I'm getting tired just thinking about tonight.. I have an ATI mach 64 board (all in wonder I think). It works just fine. I screwed up trying to do the upgrade and wound up clean installing. Maybe that's the difference. I also have a P233mmx and 32 megs EDO/64megs SDRAM. Hope this helps. It has been my experience that most hang's are due to an improper XF86 setup. Experiment some more with sax or XF86config, and test some different horz and vert frequency selections JLK Tim Shann wrote:
