9.1:Quickcam Pro 4000
Does anyone have this webcam (or any of the other Philips driver webcams) working under 9.1? Without further assistance, I am not finding the traditional Philips webcm web site (http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/) very helpful. Thanks in advance for any assistance. geno

Haven't had time to try it yet (I will NEVER catch up with my todo list!) but there's a specific module you need to have loading. OWC or something like that. It's on the makemenu with the 2.6.5-7.75 kernel. Quickcam Pro 4000 works out of the box in SuSE 9.1. I didn't have to do anything special. The PWC modules from www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/ are in the kernel already. Also in the generic kernels. But if you want to use the full image size you need the binary only module PWCX from www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/ Quote from www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/: "Usually, you will need two modules: PWC and PWCX. PWCX is the (binary only) decompressor module and was introduced to separate the open source part of the driver from the stuff I cannot release as source;" So check first your installation, if it works fine with the PWC coming with SuSE. And only if you then need a bigger image, go to www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/ and install the latest version of PWC and PWCX. HTH, Matt

did you by any chance do an upgrade from 9.0, and somehow manage not to upgrade the kernel to 2.6?

not in 9.1, they're marked as BROKEN in the kernel config.

From the news at www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/ : 2004-05-13: Don't panic about PWC missing in 2.6.6; it's not. But the USB maintainer decided to label it as "BROKEN" because of a single compile warning. That's all. A warning about a void function that should return an int (or vice versa), which has admittedly been in 2.6 for a while, because I was quite busy with PWC 9. I simply didn't feel like writing a one line patch when a new version could be there any time soon. Flames should go to greg@kroah.com. -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Koenraad Lelong R&D Manager ACE electronics n.v.

Er, no kidding? The problem is it's NOT in the SuSE 2.6 kernel. That message has no meaning for SuSE users. Joe

I'm sorry. Since I recently got a Quickcam Pro 4000, and I was looking for info, I stumbled on this. Since I'm running SuSE 9.0 it's not important to me (I hope, didn't try yet), but I thought it could help. -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Koenraad Lelong R&D Manager ACE electronics n.v.

Yes, it does. /Why/ is it not in the SuSE 2.6 kernel? Because the SuSE 2.6 kernel has patches from 2.6.6, and so the pwc module is indeed marked as broken. Therefore it is not built, therefore it's not included in the binary package. If you look in the kernel-source package, you'll find the sources for pwc, and sure enough it (paraphrase from the Kconfig file) depends: foo && bar && BROKEN -- James Ogley, Webmaster, usr local bin & Planet SuSE james@rubberturnip.org.uk www.rubberturnip.org.uk Updated GNOME packages for SUSE LINUX: www.usr-local-bin.org Latest SUSE News and Blogs: www.planetsuse.org

Not as yet, the pwc module is marked as BROKEN in the kernel config in 9.1. I've tried removing this tag, doing a make modules and putting the module in place, and that didn't work, so looks like I'm going to have to do a full recompile. Suggest you do the same (but keep your SuSE-supplied kernel available too...) -- James Ogley, UNIX Systems Administrator, Pinnacle Insurance Plc james.ogley@pinnacle.co.uk +44 (0) 20 8731 3619 www.pinnacle.co.uk Personal: james@rubberturnip.org.uk www.rubberturnip.org.uk Updated GNOME packages for SUSE LINUX: www.usr-local-bin.org
