No, you have to read /usr/share/doc/packages/pam/README.md5 Thorsten -- Thorsten Kukuk http://www.suse.de/~kukuk/ kukuk@suse.de SuSE GmbH Deutschherrnstr. 15-19 90429 Nuernberg -------------------------------------------------------------------- Key fingerprint = A368 676B 5E1B 3E46 CFCE 2D97 F8FD 4E23 56C6 FB4B

To use md5, it's a pam thing, you have to modify all files in /etc/pam.d/ that have the line containing pwcheck, which I think should only include: chfn chsh login passwd other sshd. All you have to do is add md5 to the pwcheck line and the line below as well: these are what I changed and now my system uses md5 passwords just fine: Output from grep md5 /etc/pam.d/* chfn:password required /lib/security/pam_pwcheck.so nullok md5 chfn:password required /lib/security/pam_unix.so nullok md5 use_first_pass use_authtok chsh:password required /lib/security/pam_pwcheck.so nullok md5 chsh:password required /lib/security/pam_unix.so nullok md5 use_first_pass use_authtok login:password required /lib/security/pam_pwcheck.so nullok md5 login:password required /lib/security/pam_unix.so nullok md5 use_first_pass use_authtok other:password required /lib/security/pam_pwcheck.so md5 use_cracklib other:password required /lib/security/pam_unix.so md5 use_first_pass use_authtok passwd:password required /lib/security/pam_pwcheck.so nullok md5 passwd:password required /lib/security/pam_unix.so nullok md5 use_first_pass use_authtok sshd:password required /lib/security/pam_pwcheck.so md5 sshd:password required /lib/security/pam_unix.so md5 use_first_pass use_authtok -- - Phillip Beal - Electrical and Computer Engineering -

Like Thorsten said, read /usr/share/doc/packages/pam/README.md5 and beware of the caveats. -- Penguins to save the dinosaurs -- Handelsblatt on Linux for S/390
