[SuSE Linux] Permedia 2 Video
Can anyone vouch for the ease-of-use factor with these cards? I've seen them for $60 US and under, and was wondering if they were worth the investment. Those of you paying close attention may have noticed that I started out with a Voodoo Banshee by Creative Labs and I have since moved back to an SiS6326 card I had laying around. The SiS is still fairly cranky, compared to my ol' reliable S3 ViRGE DX card, and I wonder if the Permedia is any more or less cranky. Just a shot in the dark. I appreciate any assistance. -=|JP|=- -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

I'm using a Creative Labs Graphics Blaster Exxtreme with a Permedia 2 chip and 4 Megs. It seems to work well except that 24 bit color is messed up (32 is fine though). I think the xserver for it is now part of the standard distribution with SuSE. I have Suse 5.3 running with an AccelGraphics Permedia 2 card. It works quite well at 32bit color depth, but I have had problems with it at lesser depths. This is in a Gateway PII-300 system that came with an AccelGraphics card well before they were supported by XFree. I like it well enough that I just bought another AccelGraphics Permedia 2 card from CompGeeks for $40 - a great price. Unfortunately when I tried it out tonight in my home system it wouldn't even boot (one long, three short beeps). I haven't used this motherboard with an AGP card before, so the motherboard may be the problem. A shot in the dark is a very good description of your chances for getting the Permedia2 to work... I never got my Permedia2 to do better than 640x480 (16 colors), which was totally useless with the standard configuration of the windowmanagers (There was NO other way to shut down X than the 3-finger grip and most windows were larger than the screen) Of course it is possible to configure the WMs to be usable at 640x480, but remember, I was (and still am) a newbie, more or less. This specific card was, however, acting weirdly in DOS as well. Many older DOS games could not be convinced that it was SVGA- capable or VESA-compatible... even with display-doctor. I finally replaced the 8MB Permedia2 card with a 4MB S3 ViRGE/GX2 which is happily doing 1280x1024 in 16bit colors. The old DOS games work now, and in WingCommander5 in Win95 it gives better 3D performance and more options... If I were you, I'd go for something else...

Actually, I've had the Permidia 2 working for quite a while at 1024x768. Works fine and true color is great. You have to set up the X server using xf86config and not SaX. It depends on the specific card... At least it did with the X-server included in SuSE 5.3. I tried EVERYTHING with no success whatsoever... 640x480 was the max I could get. The current drivers work very well, at least in 32bit color. Were you using them? Without the proper drivers, included in current and recent SuSE distributions, 640x480 at 16 colors is the best you could do and not very useful. I know, I couldn't use my main office system with Linux for six months because the drivers weren't available. Since they have been available, SuSE has included them. I don't think SuSE would have included them if they didn't work... i have a diamond fire gl 1000 pro it's an 8mb agp permedia 2-based card in fact - that card is the reason i chose suse over every other distro suse 5.2 was the only one that had the x-server for my card at the time the permedia2 chipset is very nice - but a bit outdated now 3dlabs are releasing the permedia3 soon - so you might want to hang on for that Jon Pennington wrote:
