[opensuse] Nepomuk, now that it works...
I've finally in 12.3 gotten nepomuk to work without totally swamping my processor, and have found it to be quite useable, especially for indexing large code bases. I'd like it to index ebooks, (mostly epub), but it refuses to do so. Does anyone know if there are plans for this or plugins needed, or what? -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Is that KDE 4.11 or Nepomuk 4.11? I noticed that 4.11 was releases on the 14th, but its not clear if/when this will be ported into OpenSuse 12.3, or if I have to wait till 13. (There is a limit to how much danger I want to subject this particular machine to). -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I noticed that 4.11 was releases on the 14th, but its not clear if/when this will be ported into OpenSuse 12.3, or if I have to wait till 13. KDE:Release:411 repository is available for some time now: http://community.kde.org/KDE_SC/Binary_Packages#KDE_4.11.0
(There is a limit to how much danger I want to subject this particular machine to). Then please read this: http://community.kde.org/KDE_SC/4.11_Release_Notes#Nepomuk In case of nepomuk, your data will be re-indexed, but tags, ratings and comments restored. John, FWIW, I just upgraded my main desktop machine from KDE 4.10 to 4.11 using the KDE_Release_411 repository and it seems to be mostly very stable. I've had a couple of minor glitches where the plasma desktop has apparently crashed and automatically restarted, but this has not affected running applications nor caused any data loss. I've not tried deleting the usual suspect rc files and starting again because, so far, it doesn't seem to be worth the trouble. Then again, I've not noticed any huge improvements (in my particular case) between 4.10 and 4.11 either, except for KMail 2, which does seem noticeably better. For me, the upgrade was worth it even if only for that. YMMV. -- ============================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au ============================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

One glitch that some people are reporting - I've encountered it myself - is graphics tearing. I see it on full screen flash video, and when I move windows left/right. It is improved (but not fixed) by going to Configure Desktop > Desktop Effects > Advanced and changing the options. On my setup it is best with Compositing set to OpenGL3.1, QT set to Native, Scale set to Smooth. If I turn off Desktop Effects, the problem gets a LOT worse. With Desktop Effects turned on, and the settings as above, it's Ok.. could be better, but it's workable. Yes I did the same yesterday, and had no problems other than Amarok needing something not yet available, but I dimply told it not to update that and everything went very smoothly. Of course I am also using the latest X11 repository. This version of KDE + X11 has my legacy Radeon X1400 video card working so smoothly that there is no performance penalty for running with desktop effects on. Not seeing any video tearing in either case. Nepomuk does in fact index my ebooks, and I can search for phrases or words in my ebook collection. Searching in Kmail is still pretty much a disappointment. Even though nepomuk is said to index mail, I haven't found the search to be of much use. It won't find names in mails that I can find manually. It only appears to search the current folder. And nepomuk never seems to use any significant CPU resource or disk thrashing. It did take several hours to grind thru everything and re-index it in the new format. I was never inconvenienced by this. Some stuff alleged to be in 4.11, mouse battery monitoring, I can't seem to find, but that might just be hardware. -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Is this kmail Tools->Search? I tried kmail2 a while back and thought Tools->Search was working but heaps slower than kmail(1) from KDE3 (too slow to be usable). I continue to use kmail(1) from the OpenSUSE 12.3 kdepim3 package, which seems almost perfect. I was about to test kmail2 from 4.11 in a VM, but given your other post about imap DOS, but it doesn't sound worth the hassle. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Since the word "kmail2"never appears anywhere (the name is deprecated), I can only assume it is kmail2. The funny thing is kmail works fine. Its the Akonadi back end goes berserk. The bug has been around for quite a while. It could be that the inability to search is due to the fact that Akonadi never successfully hands off the mail to nepomuk, so there is nothing there to search. -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

The search routine in Thunderbird works well, but you could also install Recoll, which will index all your files and is reasonably quick. You have to tell it index, however, or make a cron file for it. --doug -- Blessed are the peacemakers...for they shall be shot at from both sides. --A. M.
