Hi list, I remember there once was a short thread in this list about problems with KDE2 and VNC. I also had the problem with ~/.vnc/xstartup script. The script which used to work with KDE (SuSE 7.0) stopped working after upgrade to KDE2 and SuSE 7.1 Now, this is solved by adding -depth 24 in command line, like this: vncserver -depth 24 However, now there is another problem: It is not possible to start more than one vncserver at the same time. Before, I could start different vncservers... I used to start three different geometries at once, so I could use vncviewer from three machines having different screen resolutions, e.g: vncserver -geometry 1280x1024 //for normal 17" monitor vncserver -geometry 1400x1050 //for my notebook vncserver -geometry 1024x768 //for 15" monitor on another PC Now, it works only for the first one. For the rest I get empty background, without panel, desktop icons, etc. This is how my VNC log file looks after second vncserver run:

My xstartup script now looks like this: #!/bin/bash xrdb $HOME/.Xresources xsetroot -solid grey kde & It works only when started from text console and when there is no KDE GUI running on the server. It seems that it is not allowed to start multiple instances of KDE apps any more. Why? Also, If I put "startkde &" instead of "kde &", it starts KDE instead of KDE2 (!!!) Does anybody know how to enable VNC to run multiple sessions (and in parallel) with KDE2 ?? TIA R.Soskic

Wish I could help more, but all I can say is VNC didn't work well in 7.1. I just had three instances (2 linux, 1 win98) of VNC running on my desktop, but I am using 7.2. Also VNC does not need to be started in a terminal as it did in 7.1. VNC performance in 7.1 was not something I was thrilled about especially since it worked well in 7.0 and before. Are you using the version from www.tridia.com? I can't remember if it worked with 7.1 or not. I remember it working with one version (either 7.0 or 7.1) better than the supplied version from the cd. Might look into this if you have not already. Tom -- TRBishop tb64710@alltel.net SuSE 7.2 Pro

No, I used the version supplied on CDs. Having the abovementioned problems, I switched to the version I downloaded from AT&T site, but with the same results. The trick with the depth I learned from mailing archives at their site. Surprisingly, noone there mentioned the problem with multiple instances. I just assumed that it was me, not the SW. I will try TridiaVNC. I heard also about something called heXoNet RFB, so maybe one of the two will help while waiting for 7.2.... Thank you and best regards R.Soskic
