That's not a problem, it is a security feature! BB, Arjen

No other machine is connected to mine on my side of the firewall, so security is not an issue with me. JLK On Tuesday 27 February 2001 02:30, Arjen Runsink wrote:

I know that. It was a poor choice of words.

Interesting!...... A command that man knows nothing about, neither does info, but which works very nicely and allows xapps to work to, without the xhost + localhost stuff. Did the man pages librarian get fired too? JLK On Tuesday 27 February 2001 09:38, James Oakley wrote:

xhost + will allow anyone who can access your computer to read from or write to your display. I suggest xhost +inet:localhost Anders

Hi, Jerry: I get the same. However, when I run it as user, rather than root, it's just fine. I kinda remember something about sudo being a related item that lets you work with root within an application, when it's needed. HTH Tom

mmm... now that's risky. IF kpackage doesn't have root priviledge when you run it as user and then try to install something that requires root access then you are in a world of dodo. James Oakly suggested "sux -", an undocumented SuSE feature, which automatically does the xhost +localhost thing. Nice. JLK

I have done two installs now, and have only noticed minor problems. Grabbing the upgrades from SuSE's ftp site cured all of them. Oddly enough, I only had problems on one machine. However, that may be due to my running XF4.0.2, and kernel 2.4.0 on it. Anyway, I just want to congratulate the SuSE team for another great job. Victor Cardona
I've done 3 installs and 4 kernel builds with SuSE 7.1 so far. Unfortunately, it been on the same machine. If I can just get it working I will present it to my wife with the promise to her that I will never touch it again. (All she wants is sufing, email and letters). My wife was not at all happy when I started upgrading her P2 300 to a Duron 600....By the time I finished 10 minutes later she was very happy! But she will not let me near to install Linux..Yet :-) (she has not seen kde2.1).

Your right, but it was just my luck to land on that show stopping 1%, doing the zip setup as I've always done it, according to the 'book'. First time in 3 years that's happened since I started using SuSE. JLK On Tuesday 27 February 2001 10:34, Steven T. Hatton wrote:

After all is said and done, we all now know how to run programs as root while being logged as a user. But the one your trying there will barf on you even so. It's a kde2 thing. The dcopserver will be spitting at you. Try to open an rpm file in a directory other than home. If you use the kde1 version it will work. Kde2 has many changes. Don't know if kde2.1 has this quirk fixed. As far as your error message above, it's been that way since my first, Suse6.1, when trying to run an X prgm as root while being logged in as user.
