[opensuse] boot from USB without USB choice in bios
Still working on my trusty Pentium II which does not give me the possibility to have USB as boot possibility. Same with my Pentium III laptop. Would like to use my USB stick for booting a live linux but found up to now no usable solutions. Can somebody help me out? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sure. Just jack up the case and swap out the mobo & p.s. with a new one that DOES support USB boot. Simple fix. Maybe not cheap, but simple. The alternative is to clone the USB stick to a cd and boot to that. Or you could go get a 6 pack and a movie, forget about beating your head against the wall, spend a lot less money and have a lot more fun doing it. What about the bios? Maybe there is a new bios that would have USB boot. Bob R Stevens wrote:

If there is no BIOS options, than you need grub installed on hard with complete /boot directory. Floppy would be option if it is possible to create small initrd that can fit on floppy. I haven't tried that for a long time. In any case, it is not very usefull unless you only want to test bootable USB stick. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

As someone else already said. First thing would be to see if there is a bios update. Just possibly it may allow USB boot. I don't know what your situation is, or why you want to run it from a USB stick. BUT, IF it were me I would just dual boot from the internal hard drive. That's exactly what I did with my laptop. I got an eighty gig hard drive and partitioned it 50/50. Half for Winders and half for Linux. -- (o:]>*HUGGLES*<[:o) Billie Walsh The three best words in the English Language: "I LOVE YOU" Pass them on! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Many older BIOS that do not support USB HDD boot, do support USB Zip support... syslinux has instructions how to format your USB pen, in order to simulate a USB Zip drive. If you follow that procedure, and your BIOS supports USB Zip, it is possible to boot that way. I know, because I already did it. Good luck.
