I installed Open Office 1.0 last week with no problems. However, when I created my lesson slides for my class on Tuesday, I created html and PowerPoint. I did not really like the html output, but it was ok. The PowerPoint output was horrible. Most of the slides were blank. I subsequently ran Star Office 5.2, and exported to PowerPoint and all the slides came out as expected. Another thing I did not like about OO is that on StarOffice 5.2, I could bring up multiple documents and align them vertically or horizontally on the desktop for easy cutting and pasting. (Normally I create a new lesson but I also recycle some slides from previous classes). Open Office create new windows. Just a minor annoyance. However, I did prefer the fonts on Open Office to Star Office 5.2. -- Jerry Feldman Enterprise Systems Group Hewlett-Packard Company 200 Forest Street MRO1-3/F1 Marlboro, Ma. 01752 508-467-4315 http://www.testdrive.compaq.com/linux/

I don't think the MS filters in "OpenOffice" are as good as the ones in StarOffice (6.0). This is, after all, one of the reasons Sun wants to/will sell a commercial product. I've got SO 6.0 (for some time, the final, not beta ;-) ) but I can't say how good it is, I haven't had to export any powerpoint stuff. I never had any trouble importing MS Word files though.
I create the slides for my students. Some like to download the slides and print them in class and take notes on them. The classroom is a computer lab with Windows boxes. Next year they are talking about removable disks, but right now the students telnet into a Unix cluster. Additionally, many companies use MS Word and Power Point as the standard for information interchange. I like OO for composing, but if I am unable to produce useful Power Point documents, it limits the usefulness. On 23 May 2002 at 14:16, Michael Hasenstein wrote:

Not sure what you are trying to say. As a standalone message I do, but since your email is a response to mine I don't see the relevance? I said StarOffice has better filters (commercial ones) than the free OpenOffice (but is the same, otherwise, same code base).

I'd noticed that about the filters when I had the beta version. I also noticed that the postscript/pdf output is better in the SO6.0 beta, have you noticed this with the final version? With the MS Word files have you had problems with OO where you have not had problems with SO6.0? I've been using OO for a couple of weeks and I have found that it mangles the formatting of my files a little bit and its depressing me slightly - today I installed cross over office and started running Office in Linux. It works well but if SO 6.0 does the job then I would rather go with that than running MS Office. Another thing with SO6.0 do you get the windows and linux versions for the one fee or do you have to buy them separately? Thanks, Jethro

The release Staroffice 6.0 CD includes the version for Linux, Windows, Solaris. Also includes adabas database and Java 1.3.1 IMO the importing of MS files into Staroffice is better than OO 1.0. Mostly in that OO converted all the hyphens and quotation marks to question marks, whereas Staroffice appears to import correctly. Staroffice also appears to handle powerpoint slightly better than OO. The current Staroffice 6.0 handles import of MS formats very well, but not perfectly. While perfection is desirable, I believe that expecting perfection is unrealistic. My experience with Wordperfect Office and Lotus Smartsuite (plus earlier with Describe) is that a very good import is as good as it gets. Similarly the exchange of files between MS 97 and MS XP tends to be very good but also not perfect. -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government? As far as I know, the reason that OO displays question marks instead of hyphens and quotes and SO does not, is because SO comes with more fonts. After I installed the MS web fonts, my OO displayed the hyphens and quotes correctly as well. Already had the MS web fonts installed and did not have this problem with OpenOffice 638 through 641d, but OO 1.0 had the special character problem. Re-using the MS font script would have been a quick and easy fix, so it just tried it. No joy. The special characters now show as open boxes (sort of like an editor program reading a DOS file) rather than as question marks. Thanks for your suggestion, but I will just stick to Staroffice 6.0. -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government? -------------------------------- Ralph, As I understand it, Staroffice 6 is suppose to come with a Wordperfect filter, where OO does not. I remember hearing someone mention that it did not have it, yet Sun and every other ad mentions it being there. Can you confirm or deny the existence of a WP filter and if so, had a chance to test it also? I'd like to know also. I have the 6.0 release and I cannot get it to even try and open a .wpd document, let alone any of the other types such as those created by Presentations or Quattro Pro. There is no reference to WordPerfect in the manual, in the help files, or on the box it ships in. dave Patrick wrote:

The FAQ at www.sun.com says that there is a filter to import wordperfect files. I had heard elsewhere that the filter was for the windows version only. I have only installed the linux version. There is no Wordperfect filter in the linux version. There is no mention of Wordperfect or a WP filter anywhere in the manual, the install guide or the help contents of the program. -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government? Having now installed staroffice 6 on a windows box in addition to the linux computers I can now answer the question. Staroffice does include a filter for Wordperfect, in the windows version of SO. Doing a custom install on each system and selecting the import filters to install; in linux the wordperfect selection is non-functional, in windows it works. -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government? Yes Brian, The new KWord imports WordPerfect files. It won't handle all the formulas and macros, but it brings the bulk of the file in, so at least you can work with it. KWord is shaping up to be a nice little program and quite honestly, I would be pleased to see the developers move it more toward desktop publishing than word processing. It has a pretty good start now! :o) Patrick -- --- KMail v1.4 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.0 --- Registered Linux User #225206 Magic Page Products -- Amiga-SuSE-PC Sales & Service URL: http://home.sprintmail.com/~tracerb
