Hi All, I tried to install openSUSE Beta1, but I was not able to finish the installation. System: Intel Pentium D 830 Motherboard: P5LD2 Delux Intel ICH7R SouthBridge Silicon Image 3132 SATA controller ITE 8211F IDE controller ALC882M High-Definition Audio Marvell 88E8053 Gigabit LAN I checked the MD5 sums of all CD's. During the base installation it was not possible to install: bind-libs-32bit gettext-32bit libcrypt-32bit libgpg-error-32bit syslinux Another problem was the Grub installation, I was not able to install it anywhere. After I repaired Grub I could continue the installation. During the installation of info2html the installation the machine hangs. After another reboot the installation continues and I got the Error Message: InstTarget:E_RpmDB_subprocess_failed error:db4 error(-30978) from db->close: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery rpmdb: PANIC: fatal region error detected; run recovery For these packages: kernel-docs latex_ucs digikamimageplugins kbear kbiff kdeaccessability3 kdeadmin3 kdeartwork3 kdeedu3 kdegames3-acrade kdegames3-board kdegames3-card kdegames3-tactic kdemultimedia3-video kdenetwork3-IRC kdenetwork3-dialup kdenetwork3-query kdenetwork3-wireless kdepim3-time-managment kdetoys3 kdinstat kfs kimdaba kio_ipodslave I did not continue at this point because I have got no time. At the weekend I will give it another try and will attach y2logs, hwinfo. Ciao, uli

looks like a hardware failure. test memtest (time ago it was on the stating menu, don't know if it's always the case), if good, test the disk (but I don't knos how :-((( jdd -- pour m'écrire, aller sur: http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.net http://arvamip.free.fr

I also had issues. I tried an upgrade install on a dual boot with the Beta MS Vista.(after installing Vista I had to say "what a cluttered up joke"). The install of 10.0 beta stopped responding at the end of disk 1 at the 70% point of the writing the config, when the system was configuring the boot loader. I believe the problem with this was it could not resolve the Beta Vista install. Because of this I reinstalled XP then began a new install of 10.0 and had it lock about 22% through the first disk. Unfortunately I did not have the "Details" tab selected so I cannot say what package it locked on. ____________________________________________________ Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs

oh... did you try a "failsafe" install (third or forth entry in the menu)? this looks like a dma problem. I always do this, so I forget often this problem jdd -- pour m'écrire, aller sur: http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.net http://arvamip.free.fr

No I did not use failsafe. I can try this but I had never had any issues with anything from 9.0-9.3 or various other distributions I had tried before becoming hooked on SUSE. I seen someone post of issues with install and they listed their machine specs that included a SATA controller. I am no linux expert but I too have a SATA raid device that I only use as a SATA controller. Their is a warning about support for such devices not being available in the 2.6 kernel. I am installing to an IDE device so did not think that would be any issue. Could there be some coorelation between the SATA controller and install problems?

Actually yes -- sometimes the install program has a hard time recognizing the SATA drive depending on which mode the controller is in. Goto your BIOS and look at your SATA settings. Choose the mode that imulates ATA and SATA. On my Dell 8400 i couldnt install Suse because it could not find my hard drive. I then went into the bios and changed the controller setting to SATA/ATA Compatible and it installed fine. --- Bob Lafler <bobbblll@yahoo.com> wrote:

Would that not be very hard to measure, because a lot of it is done one mirror sites and I asume there is no way of checking this. houghi -- A "No" uttered from deepest conviction is better and greater than a "Yes" merely uttered to please, or what is worse, to avoid trouble. -- Mahatma Ghandi

There are a few mirrors but not a huge number and they should be able to provide statistics of download activity. Bob ____________________________________________________ Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs

easy to see: statistics of the opensuse wiki are visible for logged users (special pages): august 12, 21h45 (France) Statistics From OpenSUSE Site statistics There are 1166 total pages in the database. This includes "talk" pages, pages about OpenSUSE, minimal "stub" pages, redirects, and others that probably don't qualify as content pages. Excluding those, there are 18 pages that are probably legitimate content pages. #this is not great :-( There have been a total of 467087 page views, and 761 page edits since the wiki was setup. That comes to 0.65 average edits per page, and 613.78 views per edit. #hudge view (probably anybody went to the wiki to find a mirror) User statistics There are 386 registered users. 12 of these are administrators (see Project:Administrators). #remember the page opened on monday... 4 full days... 100000hits a day :-) truth is to say the first day the responsivness of the wiki was low :-) but's it's php and the load was hudge. good little mediawiki :-) jdd -- pour m'écrire, aller sur: http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.net http://arvamip.free.fr
