Sure, I bought the Personal version because it's cheaper. My strategy is to get whatever else I need from the website. Why not? Putting it another way, are there structural differences between Personal and Professional, or is it just the case that Professional has more packages? Paul

I tried that once back at version 7.2. What I found was that adding all the extra stuff I needed, tracking down the dependencies, etc. was way too much work. That was the one and only time I've purchased the Personal edition. Every other time (since 6.1) has been Pro. Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MCSE, N+ Right behind you, I see the millions Got spam? I believe that there are licenses in the Pro edition that are not paid for in the Personal edition, or have other restrictions on them. -ronc

It's been suggested that Personal is for newbies while Professional is for seasoned hands. I have a different take on it: Personal is for desktop systems (which might very well belong to seasoned hands) while Professional is for servers. Paul
I agree with you for the distribution, but the reference book in the pro version is a very good book and i think at it's good to have it. In the other and, it's possible to buy the personal and download the book from the ftp suse sever or a mirror. Dominique Michel Paul W. Abrahams wrote:

The personal will still have a good many apps, but yes, the big difference *is* that the Pro has many more apps, even some that are pay-for, and also comes with very nice books, 4 of them. Can you or anyone else be mores specific about which pay-for apps come with Pro? I assume that if you buy Pro, you don't need to pay for them, i.e., Pro doesn't just come with trial versions. Otherwise, what's the advantage? As to books: there's a case to be made for getting the books once, but not for getting a new set every time you update. Paul

That is why there is an "upgrade" edition which contains the same CD/DVD media as the 'pro' but only an update book.

I got the upgrade, was surprised by the book actually. Expected nothing, so SuSE ain't bad all the time, even their marketing department! Matt

I believe that the SuSE website (and its mirrors, which are usually less busy) have a complete collection of packages. The most comprehensive set is usually found in the fullnames subdirectory. (If you have trouble finding the path to that directory, I could reconstruct it from the ftp site.) Paul
