[opensuse] Display doesn't start after hibernation
Opensuse 11.3 After I hybernate and turn on my comp my display turns off (while loading opensuse). I have to reboot to make it work. I tried to kill X with ctrl+alt+backspace, but this hanged up my comp. Can anyone advice a direction to digg? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Most likely the drivers of your graphics card don't support hibernation. I know that mine (radeon, KMS) and some (most?) nvidia binary drivers don't. Regards, Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Does this mean that I MUST shut down comp everytime I go to sleep? I have a new NVidia card, bought not so long ago. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I hibernate my 11.2 system every day, and I have an NVidia card ("nVidia G96 [GeForce 9500 GT]"). I use the proprietary driver (from rpm: x11-video-nvidiaG02-190.53-9.1.x86_64). However, I do so from the command line in text mode: after several trials I found that was the safest method. (the opensource driver was worse, crashed. Reported). However, I have another machine that was using 11.0, an NVidia card, and hibernates fine with the open source driver (and not with the proprietary one, last time I tried long time ago). I haven't tested 11.3 on any of these machines, but... in your case, I would try hibernating from text mode, and with the splash screen disabled. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 11.2 x86_64 "Emerald" GM (Elessar))

Similar here (but I always forget which is which - I'm doing suspend to ram). I thought there was somewhere an option to tell the kernel wether it should re-initialize the BIOS of the video card when resuming, but cannot find it ATM. Maybe you can google for that? The older nvidia binary drivers are available in the nvidia repo now I believe. (Requires adding the nvidia repo and installing as a intentional user action. http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_package_repositories#NVIDIA_drivers If you have a 64-bit kernel, they have the latest nvidia driver available for testing in the build service: Look through the earlier parts of this thread to see where. http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2010-07/msg00481.html If 32-bit, I suspect they'll have it in a day or two. Once they get both packages working they should appear in the nvidia repo.
