Hello people, I'm not sure anyone on this list can answer my question, or even if I can phrase it correctly, but here goes. It is possible to bring up a remote console here on this CRT, rlogin or telnet to my SuSE Linux box, and bring up xdm remotely? I would like to run my SuSE box headless--without its CRT and keyboard. I'll save the setup in back on the computer for the devices in case I ever need a console, of course. But I'd like to free up my desk space and do everything from one CRT. The xdm man page seems to indicate that it is possible to bring up xdm from another host, but I may have misread something. Any X wizards on the list who can help? thanks much, gary -- Gary D. I think you are describing an X terminal, and yes it is possible. The headless SuSE box needs to be running xdm and maybe a font server. You might also want to run sshd to do this securely. There are HOWTOs available on the subject, and other information is available. You can alternatively run kdm in lieu of xdm, if you prefer a slightly fancier login on the X terminal. I'm no expert, but I recently set up an X terminal on a memory starved system, and it works fairly well. The X terminal box itself needs to be configured to run X, and this can be done in various ways, even including loading X from the application server over the (local) net as it (the X terminal) boots up. I'm assuming the "this CRT" is capable of running X, of course. Vnc provides another way to run remote X sessions, works a bit differently (I think), but can be done from a host running Windows or or OSes. I don't know if you can do a "full featured" X terminal over vnc, as I've only used for more limited uses. There's even a one-floppy X terminal Linux distribution that might perhaps be useful to you. -- Ken Irving Trident Software jkirving@mosquitonet.com -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

Hmm. This is what is so fuzzy. Yes, I do have xdm running here; it is what powers my FreeBSD X server. I'm thinking of using one of my virtual consoles and telnet'ing into my remote Linux box and running xdm over my ethernet connection.

Thanks for the tips; much appreciated. I'll look for the HOWTO information. My guess is that this is possible...but probably will be quite a learning curve to set up! gary

Gaey, look into vnc. I have never used it myself but from what I hear this may fit your bill. cheers, Alex. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

I'll check it out, thanks. All of a sudden I've been hearing "vnc" a lot. Worth checking out if I can't get xdm working. gary

Check out this Web site. It has a good description of how to turn an old PC into an X Terminal (running xdm). I haven't personally tried it yet. http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue27/kaszeta.html -- Robert Wohlfarth rjwohlfar@bigfoot.com "My theory's right.
