[opensuse] Host name & DHCP
Hi, Here at the office I have a dynamic DHCP/DNS setup. With this I mean a host gets it's IP-addres via dhcp, and dhcp sends the IP-address and the host-name to the DNS-server. Works fine for my Windows clients. Now I installed my new OpenSuse 11.4 laptop, and when I look at the dhcp-leases, I see no name for my IP-address. And no entry in DNS. I had this also with my old laptop running OS 11.1. What am I missing ? I set the domain-name and the host-name of my laptop in the network configuration. I am running Networkmanager for my network-setup. Thanks for any info. Does the plasmoid version of this share the same problem? Hi, I don't know what I'm using. I just installed OS 11.4 with KDE. Then the laptop does not send his host-name. I tried that workaround, then the dhcp-server gets the hostname. I'm using the icon in the tray (looks like an RJ-45 connector) to reconnect. A few hours ago I did an update and right after the reply from Tejas I rebooted to make sure. Without the work-around the dhcp-server does not get the host-name. I'll google for that plasmoid. A few days ago, in a related post, Sven Burmeister said:
It is recommended to use the plasmoid for KDE > 4.5. The package is called plasmoid-networkmanagement or something like that and it replaces the monolithic knm, i.e. NetworkManager-kde4.
There has been a lot of progress in the plasmoid so trying it is definitely worth it.
I just pass this information on. I cannot say it effects your problem. But it is another avenue for a possible solution. From what I understand, it's a NetworkManager core problem, not a frontend (gnome/kde/plasmoid) problem. There are workarounds discussed in the bug report. Tejas -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I did not think the plasmoid was only a wrapper on NetworkManager. I thought it was a different implementation. You mean that it uses the same core libraries? Yes. NetworkManager is the core libraries and system service, DE independent. NetworkManager-gnome, NetworkManager-kde, plasmoid-networkmanagement, cnetworkmanager (console networkmanager) are only frontends. They communicate with the backend via dbus. That's why when you encounter a network management issue one of the things to isolate is whether it is a frontend or backend issue, by trying a different frontend.
