[opensuse] Audacity working with OSS only
Hi all! I just downloaded/installed Audacity from Packman. When it first started the first surprise was: no sound! So I checked the Audio I/O devices to be on the sure side. Still nothing... After googling for a while, I found a workaround which recommends to start Audacity as follows: $ aoss audacity (aoss - Wrapper script to facilitate use of the ALSA OSS compatibility library) By doing so, the sound comes out from my speakers very well... Because ALSA is a newer, feature-richer, bla bla bla sound system I'd like to know if anyone here has managed to run Audacity using it instead of OSS... What is your Playback set to? Mine works. 10.2, Audacity joe@jmorris:~> rpm -q audacity audacity-1.3.2-0.pm.beta -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.2 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I am running it with ALSA. However, I can't say anything about the Packman version since my version (1.3.2-beta) is self compiled from cvs. Charles -- dprintk("kick_rx: maybe kicking\n"); linux-2.6.6/drivers/net/ns83820.c

I totally forgot, since Audacity uses portaudio: http://www.portaudio.com/ for output, you will need to install v19 and recompile Audacity. v18 only support OSS. Charles -- I've run DOOM more in the last few days than I have the last few months. I just love debugging ;-) (Linus Torvalds)

the PackMan-RPM use portaudio19 and it works fine with alsa on my X86_64. Detlef -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Portaudio is the way to go. Using ALSA causes too many Xrun problems and limits the number of input/output ports. Portaudio gives my consumser based Audigy 1 16 in/out, and latency is down to 20 msec (not bad for an Audigy). If your good with configuring kernels and setting up boot options for multiple kernel options you might also want to try the SUSE-JACKLab projects. They have compiled a fairly stable preemptive kernel (very low latency kernel) that will give more robust response (got the Audigy down to less than 5 msec latency). Unfortunately, for myself. The SUSE Jacklab kernel and the ATI drivers don't play well together (but then the ATI drivers don't play well with many others as well :( ). Eitherway, go to the Packman site and grab the Portaudio packages (or set it up in YaST as and installation source). Also, as a side note - Audacity 2 (beta) is much improved (but still beta) and I was surprised to find the "qtrackor" works very well (simple but effective). Have you tried using a Vanilla with the CK patchset? http://members.optusnet.com.au/ckolivas/kernel/ Charles -- panic("mother..."); linux-2.2.16/drivers/block/cpqarray.c

You may want to check your computer date. You apparently sent this message on Nov 11, 2006. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
