[opensuse] Back-Porting 11.0 package management to 10.3 -- Possible?
List, For those that know the details of the new package management scheme in 11.0, would it be feasible to backport it to 10.3. After having used it, it is orders of magnitude faster that the 10.3 scheme, but with so much effort into a number of 10.3 desktops/servers, it doesn't justify an OS upgrade alone. How interwoven is it with 11.0? Is it simply a matter of replacing a few packages or is it so tightly integrated with the 11.0 that a backport is simply a pipe-dream? -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. There is already a 10.3 Backport directory in the OBS. I was using it for a while a few months ago, but it is IMHO too tied into 11.0 to be used effectively in 10.3, at least last I tried. When I went back to the original update stack after running the newer backported, there were several updates I had not been aware of with the newer programs, so I concluded it better to stay with the original w/ updates. I quit when it was going to obsolete or break opensuseupdater. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

As far as I can remember from my journey from 10.3 through factory to 11.0 there was a period when perl switched from 5.8 to 5.10 and a lot of other key packages changed dependencies as well. I remember coolo saying that it is not easy. One issue is also that it showed various inconsistencies in our RPM dependencies throughout the system that we had to fix before 11.0. So its not just "some RPMs". Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
