Please Help a Newbie - move file from Windows to Linux
Hi I'm new to Linux & SuSE and am having problems getting the mouse, a Logitech Cordless Wheel Mouse, to work in SuSE. I have tried editing XF86Config without success and have now downloaded a replacement driver. Unfortunately I can't complete the SuSE configuration until I can get the mouse working, so I cant get access the Internet in SuSE as I need to configure Samba to access my proxy server. The replacement mouse driver is a tar of 1.7Mb and on one of my Windows drives on the dual boot WinME SuSE 8.0 system. So can someone help me to access the tar in SuSE from Windows and then advise how I install the driver? Welcome to Linux! Check what is the partition where you have your windows... Then mount with: mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt where /dev/hda1 is your windows partition. I assume there is an empty directory /mnt to mount on. Try /dev/hda? for your first IDE disk, /dev/hdb? for second, and so on... The numbers correspond to your primary partitions /dev/hda1 - hda4, and the logic partitions hda5 - ... Try /dev/sda? for your first SCSI disk, /dev/sdb? second, and so on... And have a look man mount. Pep Serrano. On Thursday 02 May 2002 21:47, keith wrote:

Keith, I am going to ask the stupid questions, since I am still a newbie too ;o), just to check your progress so far in getting the mouse to work. I am going to assume you have just did a fresh install of 8.0 as a dual boot setup, right? Is the mouse a usb type cordless? Does it use IR or radio control type? SuSE 8.0 did not set it up on install or was it added later? I know there were some things about USB mentioned here and a remedy for it was mentioned to help those people with USB mice. Have you ran Sax2 to configure your mouse and video yet? You should do that from run level 3, text mode, before starting X. Your mouse should be supported and operate ok, once you get all the settings correct. You won't need your Windows driver for the mouse as those don't work over in Linux. I am guessing that is the tar file you have? To the best of my knowledge, all mouse drivers are built into XFree86 and the kernel now? Someone correct me if I am wrong there. SuSE 8.0 did not set it up on install or was it added later? No it was installed by SuSE and worked fine during the installation and whilst I navigated around to see what was available but I did not edit anything, just looked. Then after re-booting the mouse just stayed stuck in the middle of the screen. Regards Keith Jacobs
