Dear All, I am wondering if I should use RAID, and I'd like some comments/advice about the RAID solution or maybe simpler and better alternatives. Here is the situation: a) I have two IDE HD's, a 13.6 GB and a 4.3 GB. b) I miscalculated the space I needed in my home directory when I partitioned the 13.6 HD and installed and configured Suse 6 months ago. (My needs have also changed during this time). I need about another 700 MB in the home directory. I have them available in the large HD, but that would require repartitioning that HD, reinstalling, etc. (It is my understanding that I cannot resize the / partition non-destructively; moreover, the / and the /home partitions are not even contiguous). c) I also have that space available on the second HD. d) I know I could mount a partition of the second HD under my home directory (say /home/ramon/disk2). But that is somewhat of a pain, since it is something I will always need to take care of manually (make sure I keep things spread around well enough so that I don't fill either partition). In other words, I'll need to move some directories under the /disk2 folder, and then I might need to remove them to the old one, etc, etc. This is even more of a pain if I have programs that point to locations that keep moving around. d) I thought about using (software) RAID, something like linear concatenation or RAID 0. But I am not sure it is appropriate in my case. I am concerned about: 1. Increased CPU load; that I want to minimize (I have an AMD 233 MHz and I do a fair amount of number crunching, so it is not like I have CPU to spare). 2. Spending a huge amount of time configuring RAID. heya Ramon, two solutions come to mind. one us to use Partition Magic. the newer PM (version like 4.02 and up, i think) allow resizing of linux and win98 partitions. (anyone know if it will handle win2k yet?) this would allow you to shrink one of the existing partitions, and add that space to the /home. This does not destroy data. at least, its not supposed to, but i would still reccomend a backup. other idea is to totally move /home to the second drive. you can create a new /home on the second drive, and then mount it upon boot like you are the other filesystems. as i dont fully know your situation, this might not be a good idea for you. the partition magic has worked for me many times, so if it sounds like it will help you, thats what i'd reccomend. -- Rocky McGaugh rmcgaugh@atipa.com On Fri, 19 May 2000, Ramon Diaz-Uriarte wrote:
