need help with transferring files from Android
Hi, I am traveling with my laptop with OS 15.5(KDE and should copy large files from my phone to the laptop. I have sshelper on the phone. But I forgot to copy the rsync command I use at home and didn't find out (google doesn't help). I can connect via console to the phone with ssh, but all my rsync trials failed (the parameters and/or path are wrong). So I thought I use bluetooth. The connection between phone and laptop can be established, but when I want to send a file from the phone I get the message: "laptop-name doesn't accept receiving files". Googling only brought up to install KDE-connect, I did on phone and on laptop. But it doesn't find another device to pair... (Don't know if it has to do with the kind of internet connection I use: My phone is connected and I use it as a hotspot to which I connect the laptop). So, if you can help me find a way to get files from Android phone to laptop, that would be great. I don't care how. - how to make my laptop accepting files via bluetooth? - or how to make kde-connect finding phone/laptop, - or how should the rsync command in sshelper look to copy photos from phone to laptop, - or any other idea? If i remember correct, you need to install kde connect app on your phone and the kde connect stuff on your laptop. phone and laptop should see each other when they are inside the same wifi network if you are able to ping each other its a good startpoint. (have set up it long in past at a phone/network from a friend) simoN -- www.becherer.de

Hi, what I end up using (very reliably) is the SMB protocol (windows file sharing). Set up samba server on linux and there are plenty Android apps supporting smb. I use for instance: AndSMB for browsing and transferring files manually and FolderSync Pro (for automatically syncing directories, e.g. backups and camera photos) The latter also should support sftp and other protocols, but that didn't work for me, but that's years ago. I would give this a try as it should work via ssh/sftp in theory. Regards, Paul Neuwirth

I see you are trying wireless methods. Why don't you simply use the USB cable? Just plug the cable ends to both phone and laptop, and dolphin should see the phone instantly and allow you to copy files in the normal way. The phone should pop a message as to what to do with the connection, because it can be used for several things. Just select "file transfer". After you do that, dolphin should see the phone directories and files. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.5 x86_64 at Telcontar)
I am using owncloud (Infinite Scale) for wireless sync and a custom adb script for cable. KDEconnect is also helpful... Am Donnerstag, 20. Juni 2024, 13:18:20 MESZ schrieb Carlos E. R.:

Hi all. May I add an on-topic specific question? Some years (and opensuse versions) ago, (on both Android and IOS, but worts on IOS) cable transfers were plagued by interruptions in the middle of the job (so much that I choose sFTP over USB). This issue has improved or we still face this problem? Thanks a lot,
Jones usb on iphone works for me
with mount: ifuse /mnt/iphone and unmount it with: fusermount -u /mnt/iphone you need to install the package of course sometimes i have to switch off iphone and switch on to get the connection, but that's the only problem. simoN -- www.becherer.de

That indeed was why I switched to adb. Maybe the problems have been solved, but adb pull was always faster and more reliable for me. The security has been improved, so I have no concerns anymore having it running - it will only connect to known devices and via known cable (all via signatures that need to be approved) adb pull /sdcard/DCIM/Camera and after successful copying of the pics, I do a adb shell rm /sdcard/DCIM/Camera/*; to automatically download the photos... path may vary depending on phone. I even had this automated through a udev rule (copies photos to destination when phone is connected), but that didn work the way i needed. I have a long image manipulation script running after download from phones (and my camera's SDcard), so it's a bit more complex than above. I also convert Movies into web optimized versions with fade-in and fade-out, all automatically and in the background...

It worked perfect for me (Android 14 on Samsung to OS 15.5). ...
path may vary depending on phone. ...
Usually I use sshelper to rsync from my phone to the desktop. The path is a bit strange (that's why I didn't remember it): /data/data/com.arachnoid.sshelper/home/SDCard/ So I use rsync -av -e ssh -z --verbose --progress /data/data/com.arachnoid.sshelper/home/SDCard/ daniel@...ipNo...:/home/daniel/phone/samsung_s22/ (I use it without --delete because I want a full copy of whatever was on my phone and usually do this backup before I delete files on the phone) -- -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Málaga Twitter: @Marsfotografo (often explicit nudes) https://www.patreon.com/danielbauer https://www.daniel-bauer.com (nudes)

Thanks a lot,
Normally cable "just works", except when the connection is bad, like with a damaged receptacle and then some wireless method is the way to go. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.5 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Yes Carlos, you made my live a lot easier! The last time I tried with USB cable is years ago, and it didn't work well (had to install don't know what and still it was complicated...), but now I just plugged in the cable and saw it in dolphin... It takes quite a while loading a large directory (my "camera" folder is huge...), but then I can use it as any other folder. Cool! Welcome :-) On ancient phones, before Android, special software was needed, support varied per brand and model, for transferring files with a special cable. With Androids, when the cable was connected to the computer, the phone would "switch off" and make itself behave as a memory stick. When unplugged, the phone had to scan itself before it would work normally. Later, Android phones made files or photos available via MTP or PTP protocols invented by Microsoft. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol The Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) is an extension to the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) communications protocol that allows media files to be transferred automatically to and from portable devices.[1] Whereas PTP was designed for downloading photographs from digital cameras, Media Transfer Protocol allows the transfer of music files on digital audio players and media files on portable media players, as well as personal information on personal digital assistants. MTP is a key part of WMDRM10-PD,[1] a digital rights management (DRM) service for the Windows Media platform. In 2011, it became the standard method to transfer files to and from Android.[2] MTP is part of the "Windows Media" framework and thus closely related to Windows Media Player. Versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system from Windows XP SP2 support MTP. Windows XP requires Windows Media Player 10 or higher;[3] later Windows versions have built-in support. Microsoft has made an MTP Porting Kit available for older versions of Windows, back to Windows 98. The USB Implementers Forum device working group standardized MTP as a full-fledged Universal Serial Bus (USB) device class in May 2008.[4] Since then, MTP is an official extension to PTP and shares the same class code.[5] So I guess there was a period in Linux while these protocols were implemented. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. Thanks for your help! This is actually very good: On your phone you install the app LocalSend, on your laptop the flatpak LocalSend. Now you can send/receive both ways over wifi, and bleeding fast. It's open source fwiw.
