[opensuse] Remote login - openSUSE 12.1
As described in bug report #731087, remote login does not work in openSUSE 12.1. This is a feature that I use regularly. I can get a remote desktop using the X :n -query <host> command, but while I get a desktop, I cannot switch away from it, without losing the remote session. Is there any other way of connecting via XDMCP that works in a manner similar to the remote login? tnx jk -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Why not ssh in while allowing forwarding of X session? XDMCP over insecure links has been a bad idea since the Pleistocene and hasn't improved since. -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

X over ssh allows running only one app and that does work. However, it doesn't provide the full desktop. Also, I'm not using it over an insecure link. I use it only on the local lan. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Ok, I see your point regarding local network. I suspect X is limted to 127.0.0.1 on the target machine. As to your first point, (only one app), that's not really true, I often ssh into a remote machine, and immediately open up multiple shells with something like "xterm &", or "konsole &". And if I need a full GUI desktop, which is rare, I just type kde at the command prompt and bob is my father's brother. -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I have used remote login for years. It just broken in 12.1. What I'm looking for is a way to use XDMCP without relying on that remote login function, where you cannot select the remote host. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I notice that during the beta it was remove. I think it because of the move to Gnome 3, I think if you look at Fedora 15 above XDMCP is missing from them. Try do a search on XDMCP, GDM3 and KDM4. -- (678) 636-9678 ----------------------------------------- Discover it! Enjoy it! I use KDE. The option is there, it just doesn't work. When you open Remote Login, a list of available systems is listed, but as soon as you try to select one, the panel disappears and you're back at the login screen. It worked in 11.4, which also used KDE4. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

There's already a bug report on it. However, that doesn't do anything for me now. This is something I use regularly and is keeping me from upgrading some systems to 12.1, unless I can find some work around. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Then don't upgrade :-), that's probably the best option. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (8.0°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It might be easier to fix that than trying to get your rmeote login issue fixed. Maybe it's just lack of the right driver? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (3.0°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I disagree. What you describe is how it always worked for me - the list disappeared and back at the login. If you check the archives you'll see I asked about setting up XCMCP earlier this year since I was very confused by the different ways Mandriva, Redhat and Suse seem to want to make this work, all with different config files and not always in the kdmrc. I would have appreciated your help since you seem to have had it working on 11.4. Its no longer an issue, but what you describe is what I saw with 11.4. -- The major advances in civilization are processes that all but wreck the societies in which they occur. - A.N. I have another ThinkPad with 11.4 on it. Remote login worked with it for me. In fact, I just tried it again to verify. It still works. So, for me at least, remote login works with 11.4. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Indeed, but that's not what I said - you elided what I said. I haven't tried connecting to any other distro, as all my systems are openSUSE. However, from the sound of it, yours is a different problem. I am trying to connect to an openSUSE system that I have no problem connecting to with earlier versions. The problem is that with 12.1, you can't even attempt to connect to a system because as soon as you move the mouse to select one, the panel disappears. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I am aware of starting multiple apps and have done so many times, but I was speaking in the general sense in comparison with being able to access the entire desktop with XDMCP. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
