[SLE] Sendmail Problem..

I just went through this with SuSE 6.3. After updating your aliases file, simply run (as root) newaliases to create a new aliases.db file. (I ran it from the /etc/mail directory.) Or you could blow away the sendmail virus and install qmail+fastforward, and
get the added bonus of security and reliability! 8-Þ

Let's NOT start that Jihad here. QMail has pros and cons. Sendmail has pros and cons. End of story. :) D At 03:33 PM 3/13/00 -0500, Keith Warno wrote:

Correct. There are pros and cons to everything. Nothing new there.
It's all about coming to a compromise, given the pros and cons. Before you
can arrive at a compromise, you have to be educated. That's what the links
were for. Education, not a Jihad.
But yes, when it comes to solving a sendmail problem, I am biased.
Replacing sendmail with qmail has worked for me. Individual results may
vary. Void where prohibited.

Please bear with me on this one. I have been asked to evaluate sendmail versus qmail. I have experience with sendmail, but not qmail. The system programmers want qmail, so the CEO is asking me. I visited qmail's site, and qmail looks fine to me. So here it is: What are the strengths and weaknesses of each? I know it's asking much from a Linux user, but I must ask: Please be objective. If I may offer a suggestion: Go to BUGTRAQ archives and do a search on each. I have been wondering about this myself. With Sendmail you'll find a bunch of known holes. Most have been fixed. It has been in use for a long time, it is well known. QMAIL and POSTFIX are new to the game, they have may have a few bug reports, Will they have as many bug reports when they have been around as long as sendmail has? Do they look good at the moment because they haven't been used as much as sendmail? Is the key to a secure site to keep changing your tools as they become familiar? -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

It works for the U.S. Army. After getting their NT on Intel site defaced, they switched to something obscure on a Macintosh. At the time, there were only 8,000 copies of their web server in use. They figured with a server that obscure, the script-kiddies wouldn't be able to break in due to the lack of information on their server. -- George Toft http://www.georgetoft.com -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I think I've answered my question: 1. There is a standing cash offer for anyone discovering a security flaw in qmail; 2. hotmail.com uses qmail. I guess Microsoft decided to use something secure after their rash of break-ins. If it's good enough for Microsoft to use under Unix, it's good enough for me! If anyone wants to comment on my previous requestanyway, I would appreciate it. -- George Toft http://www.georgetoft.com -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Aside from the abrasive folk on the mailing list, it has a lot of good points. o Security o Efficiency o Speed o Configurability o Complete modularity Those are the brief, off the top of my head, points. If you'd like details, feel free. I've been using it on several different networks and hosts, all running Linux, SuSE at that, for over two years. Boy does it make virtual domains and email aliases easy compared to sendmail. -- Brad Shelton On Line Exchange http://online-isp.com -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
