did you activate the aux. mouse port in your kernel setup? Does it work with the "old" 2.0.36 kernel? Did it work (before) on X with an "old" kernel? These questions point onto lack of kernel mouse support...

/dev/psaux is only needed for ps2 mice. If microsoft basic means a normal serial mouse, psaux is not needed. Support for serial mice is included in the serial driver, that means, you must have enabled serial support. It may be compiled as a module. But I wouldn't recommend that. Henning -- H.
