I have had mixed experiences with the X setup utilities in SuSE with getting 'out of the box' good displays. Almost invariably, this has come down to Sax2 making incorrect, but safe guesses as to the hsync and vsync of the monitor. Looking up the _real_ values from the manufacturer's spec, and manually inserting them (expert options in Sax2, or something similar) has always done the trick.
