Running ULB Gnome for a day now on SuSE 9.0 Pro, giving me two whole days of experience with Gnome... It is very clean and much faster than KDE (thank you James.) But, the learning curve is a bit steep for me. A few questions: 1. Is there a Gnome equivalent of the KDE "Open Terminal Here" function for Nautilus? I use a lot of deeply nested folders, and it's nice to get a terminal opened at the current directory down where I need it. Besides, my typing isn't as accurate as it used to be! ;-) 2. When I add a file directory link to a panel, it is opened with Mozilla. OK, I can see this has advantages in some cases, but for me I would prefer using the file manager. How do I configure this change correctly? I tried setting up the shortcut as an application, with the run line: nautilus --no-desktop "/data/documents/The Folder I Want To Open". This works in that Nautilus opens, but when I close the folder, the Nautilus-throbber process crashes pretty consistently (1 every 3-4 times). 3. I run dual monitors driven by a Matrox G450. In KDE, the workspace switcher on the bottom panel configures itself uniquely for each desktop. (I like to name each workspace with the name of the anchor application running in that space. In KDE, if I had four workspaces on each monitor, I could have eight uniquely named workspaces.) In Gnome, the workspaces are named identically on both monitors. Is this configurable? Probably I'll have more questions in the coming days, but so far, so good. Can I say again "thank you" to James? ULB Gnome is quite snappy right out of the box! Glad you like it, tell your friends :)

You can do this with Nautilus' scripting ability, you should be able to find an appropriate script (along with loads of others) at http://g-scripts.sf.net/
nautilus --no-desktop "/data/documents/The Folder I Want To Open". This works in that Nautilus opens, but when I close the folder, the Nautilus-throbber process crashes pretty consistently (1 every 3-4 times).
Can't replicate this, if you run that command from a terminal, is there any useful output when it crashes?

Really don't know about this one, I suspect it has to do with how GNOME and KDE deal with Xinerama - might be worth Googling around those search terms... -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 9.0) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org

Thanks James, that did the trick with the Open Terminal Here script (in PERL).
nautilus --no-desktop "/data/documents/The Folder I Want To Open". This works in that Nautilus opens, but when I close the folder, the Nautilus-throbber process crashes pretty consistently (1 every 3-4 times).

I can't get it to crash from a terminal either. It only crashes from a Launcher on the top panel. Go figure...

I Googled, and it seems to be that that's the way Gnome is. I'm not using Xinerama BTW; the displays are two separate displays. It seems that some parts of Gnome are more aware of the second display than others. James, do you recommend updating to 2.4 from the SuSE supplementary directory? And if so, are there any gotchas of which I should be aware? Thanks again, Mark -- _____________________________________________________________ A Message From L. Let's just say I haven't ;) Read http://swamprat.homeunix.org/index.cgi/2004/01/05#20040105 Also, when I investigated the SuSE GNOME 2.4 packages (admittedly, they have been updated since), Evolution didn't work rihgt with the ORBit2 package shipped, and you need at least 2.8 for GNOME 2.4. -- James Ogley, UNIX Systems Administrator, Pinnacle Insurance Plc james.ogley@pinnacle.co.uk +44 (0) 20 8731 3619 www.pinnacle.co.uk Personal: james@rubberturnip.org.uk www.rubberturnip.org.uk Updated GNOME packages for SUSE LINUX: www.usr-local-bin.org

Whoops! No offence intended; I always perceived ULB Gnome as a feature-rich enhancement to SuSE's Gnome. Seems it's a bit deeper than that... Now having read the review, all I can say is: Bob's your uncle! Thanks again, Mark -- _____________________________________________________________ A Message From L.
