Hi all, I would like to upgrade my Netscape v4.8 to Netscape 7.x on SuSE 8.2. Should I remove the current version, or just install the new one over the other? Also, will this effect Mozilla, and if so, any hints on how to deal with this? Thanks all! Anthony gunia@calumet.purdue.edu

Anthony, Since the Netscape 4.8 was installed by your SuSE, it will have a different path than the Netscape 7.x you download from their site. So unless you just want two copies, I think you can safely remove the older version. Some keep both until they are sure everything works with the new though. The biggest difference, other than features, between the old and new will be the plugins, as they are different between these versions. Since Netscape is based on Mozilla anyway and usually behind it in revisions, one has to wonder why bother with Netscape? Agreed. Netscape is pretty much just a AOL branded version of Mozilla that has been infused with all their bloat. But if you REALLY want a new version of Netscape then I would suggest waiting just a bit because they are going to be putting out a new version soon based on Mozilla 1.4 final. That would be the best choice if your going to use Netscape...otherwise just grab Mozilla 1.4 when it's released. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org ----------------------------------------------------------- This e-mail and any attachment is intended for anyone with an email address and does not contain information that is confidential and privileged or that is of any intrinsic value to anyone.

The biggest difference, other than features, between the old and new will be the plugins, as they are different between these versions. Sometimes the plugins are as important as the basic package functionality!
Since Netscape is based on Mozilla anyway and usually behind it in revisions, one has to wonder why bother with Netscape? Netscape allows "xv" to take over the graphical imag processing. Mozilla doesn't. Sometimes I use the SuSE 7.2 box and Netscape 4.7 just so I can use the integrated xv.
I feel for Anthony's caution.

Being a Linux newbie, I can't directly answer the following question:

However, a couple of comments. Netscape 7 is not an upgrade to Netscape 4.x. The two programs are utterly different, linked only as a matter of marketing. Netscape 4.x is a dog, and rather unlike anything else, and for this very reason you might want to keep it around if you are thinking of writing any web pages: it's good to check that Netscape 4.x can render them legibly. Not only is Netscape 7 typically behind Mozilla (as pointed out earlier), it's said to be burdened down with attempts by TimeLifeWarnerAOL (etc.) to have you frequent their sites and buy their products. I don't know for sure as I've never tried it; and I've never tried it because I've never heard any argument for its superiority to Mozilla, which I've been very contentedly using since version 0.98 (and with more or less irritation since well before that).
